In Himachal Pradesh the entrance examination occurs every year. This is examination is known as Himachal Pradesh Combined Pre-entrance Test. This examination is quite tough and competitive one. In this examination the candidate should have physics, chemistry, mathematics and English in their (10+2) board exam. The candidate is supposed to get at least 60% in this entrance exam for qualifying. The Himachal Pradesh Combined Pre-entrance Test is taken by the National Institute of Technology.
There is reservation for the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and two seats is reserved for the candidates who have done diploma in engineering and technology and another two seats are reserved for teachers who are the employees of any governmental polytechnic college.
The medium of the questions and answers is in English.

The admission test generally occurs in the month of May or June in each year.
Candidates who have got marks above the minimum cut off marks are considered first and then the merit list is declared. The merit is totally based on the performance and the marks of the candidates.
Various streams are provided in the colleges which are under the control of the assigned management authority. Some of the streams are as follows:
- Computer Science
- Electronics and Communication
- Electrical and Electronics
There are also some seats for Architecture. The allocation of the streams and the colleges are mainly done on the basis of the merit list.
The candidates who have done three years diploma course in engineering and technology they can also sit for Himachal Pradesh Combined Pre-entrance Test. They will be admitted as the lateral entry. They will get chance directly in the second year of the degree course. There are both government and non-government institutions are there. These non-government institutions are self-sponsored institutions.
This examination is meant mainly for the candidates of Himachal Pradesh. There are some rules and regulations there for the candidates from other states of India. These rules are assigned by the controller of the examination board.
After completion of the bachelor’s degree most of the students can get job in good companies by the process of interviews and examination in the college campus. So the numbers of examinees are increasing in every next year.
