1158Munich was founded by Henry the Lion on the banks of the river Isar. Munich was the capital and the largest city of the German state of Bavaria, on the banks of River Isar, north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is the third largest city in Germany, after Berlin and Hamburg, with a population of around 1.5 million.
1216Prince Louis of France captured the city of Winchester and soon conquered over half of the England. The First Barons' War (1215–17) was a civil war in the Kingdom of England in which a group of rebellious barons, led by Robert Fitzwalterand supported by a French army under the future Louis VIII of France, made war on King John of England.
1789Whiskey distilled from maize was first produced by American clergyman the Rev Elijah Craig. It is named as Bourbon because Rev Craig lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Bourbon whiskey is a type of American whiskey: a barrel-aged distilled spirit made primarily from corn.
1900Hawaii became a United States territory. The Territory of Hawaii or Hawaii Territory was an organized incorporated territory of the United States. Hawaii is the only U.S. state located in Oceania and the only one composed entirely of islands. It is the northernmost island group in Polynesia, occupying most of an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean. Hawaii is the only U.S. state not located in the Americas.
1907Norway grants women the right to vote. Liberal politician Gina Krog was the leading campaigner for women's suffrage in Norway. She founded the Norwegian Association for Women's Rights and the National Association for Women's Suffrage to promote this cause. Middle class women won the right to vote in municipal elections in 1901 and parliamentary elections in 1907.
1926Brazil left the League of Nations. The League of Nations was an intergovernmental organization founded as a result of the Paris Peace Conference that ended the First World War. It was the first international organization whose principal mission was to maintain world peace.
1949Albert II, a rhesus monkey, rode a V-2 rocket to an altitude of 134 km (83 mi), thereby becoming the first monkey in space. Albert II became the first monkey in space as his flight reached 134 km (83 mi) - past the Kármán line of 100 km taken to designate the beginning of space.
1955Chile became a signatory to the Buenos Aires copyright treaty. The Buenos Aires Convention is a copyright treaty signed at Buenos Aires, Argentina, providing mutual recognition of copyrights where the work carries a notice containing a statement of reservation of rights. This was commonly done with the phrase "All rights reserved”.
1962The European Space Research Organization was established in Paris – later becoming the European Space Agency. The European Space Research Organization (ESRO) was an international organization founded by 10 European nations with the intention of jointly pursuing scientific research in space.
1967Mariner 5 was launched towards Venus. Mariner 5 (Mariner Venus 1967) was a spacecraft of the Mariner program that carried a complement of experiments to probe Venus' atmosphere by radio occultation, measure the hydrogen Lyman-alpha (hard ultraviolet) spectrum, and sample the solar particles and magnetic field fluctuations above the planet.
