List of historical events of 20 June:

712Muhammad Bin Quasim, Arabs, attacked on Sindh and captured it. Muhammad defeated and killed King Dahir, Hindu king, at Rawar. He was an Umayyad general who conquered the Sindh and Multan regions along the Indus River for the Umayyad Caliphate. He was born and raised in the city of Taif (in modern-day Saudi Arabia). Qasim's conquest of Sindh and southern-most parts of Multan enabled further Islamic expansion into India.
1756A group of British soldiers along with Halvel were imprisoned by some rebellions in a suffocating cell that gained notoriety as the ""Black Hole of Calcutta." The Black Hole of Calcutta was a small dungeon in the old Fort William in Calcutta, India, where troops of the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj ud-Daulah, held British prisoners of war after the capture of the fort.
1837Queen Victoria succeeded to the British throne. She inherited the throne at the age of 18, after her father's all three elder brothers had died, leaving no legitimate, surviving heir. Victoria attempted to influence government policy and ministerial appointments. Publicly, she became a national icon, and was identified with strict standards of personal morality.
1840Samuel Morse received the patent for the telegraph. Samuel Finley Breese Morse was an American painter and inventor. Morse contributed to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system based on European telegraphs. He was a co-developer of the Morse code, and helped to develop the commercial use of telegraphy.
1869Laxmanrao Kirloskar, great industrialist, social reformer, patriot and founder of Kirloskar Industry, was born at Belgaum. The Kirloskar Group is an Indian conglomerate. The company exports to over 70 countries over most of Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe. The flagship & holding company, Kirloskar Brothers Ltd, is India's largest maker of pumps and valves. And also undertakes construction projects through its subsidiary Kirloskar Construction And Engineers Ltd.
1887Victoria Terminus, the busiest railway station in India, opened in Bombay (now Mumbai). The station was built in the Bori Bunder area of Mumbai to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It is one of the busiest railway stations in India, serving as a terminal for both long-distance trains and commuter trains of the Mumbai Suburban Railway. Later the station was renamed as Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
1948Lord Mountbatten resigns as the Governor General of Indian Union. He was the last Viceroy of India and the first Governor-General of the independent Dominion of India (1947–48), from which the modern Republic of India was to emerge in 1950.
1960The Mali Federation gained independence from France. The Mali Federation was a country in West Africa linking the French colonies of Senegal and the Sudanese Republic for a period of only two months. It was founded as a territory with self-rule within the French Community and became independent after negotiations with France. It was later split into Mali and Senegal.
1990Asteroid Eureka was discovered. 5261 Eureka was the first Mars Trojan discovered. It was discovered by David H. Levy and Henry Holt at Palomar Observatory. The Mars Trojans are a group of objects that share the orbit of the planet Mars around the Sun. They can be found around the two Lagrangian points 60° ahead of and behind Mars.
2003The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) is an American non-profit and charitable organization headquartered in San Francisco, California, that operates many wikis. The foundation is mostly known for hosting Wikipedia, an Internet encyclopaedia which ranks in the top-ten most-visited websites worldwide. The organization was founded by Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia, as a way to fund Wikipedia and its sister projects through non-profit means.
