  • Food inflation hit a three-year high of 18.18 per cent on the back of a huge increase in the prices of onion and other vegetables, in turn pushing up headline inflation for the third month in a row to a six-month high of 6.1 percent in August.
  • Shares in India’s biggest drugmaker, Ranbaxy, have sunk to a record low after the US drugs regulator issued an import alert for one of its plants. The alert by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows authorities to detain drugs on the list “without physical sampling and analysis”.
  • The All India Students’ Association (AISA) on Monday made a clean sweep in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union elections, bagging all four seats by huge margins.  The results of the election were declared on Monday, after counting of votes for three days.

  • Self-proclaimed godman Asaram Bapu will have to stay in jail till September 30 as his judicial custody has been extended by 14 more days by a Jodhpur court. Asaram has been accused by a 16-year-old girl of sexually assaulting her.
