West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (JEM)

West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (JEM) used to take place everywhere in West Bengal in the month of April usually. The notice for the examination is given in the month of November usually.

This is a common entrance examination. The candidates who have Science subjects like physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology or statistics in (10+2) level are eligible to sit for the examination. There are various categories of the examination. Those who are willing to sit for engineering will choose “E” category, those who are will willing to sit for the medical only they will go for “M” category and those who will opt for both medical and engineering they will sit for “C” category. The difference among these categories is for “E” category the candidate has to give test for physics, chemistry and mathematics, for “M” category the candidate has to give test for physics, chemistry and biology and for “C” category the candidate has to give test for physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology. Depending upon the marks secured in each of the subjects the evaluation of each of the candidates will be done. After going through all the mark sheets of the candidates and doing the evaluation the ranks of the qualified candidates are declared. According to the merit list the candidates used to get the chance in the engineering and the medical colleges.

West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (JEM) board was established in the year 1962. At that time the name of the board was West Bengal Board of Examination for Admission to the Engineering Degree Colleges. This board was meant for taking entrance examination for the engineering colleges only. The idea behind the formation of this board was to hold a common admission test for engineering colleges which will easily segregate the good and eligible candidates easily in the state of West Bengal. But later on this board also included the medical entrance examination within this common test.

Previously West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (JEM) was a subjective examination but from 2007 onwards this examination is following the MCQ pattern of examination. There is a chairperson who used to declare the date of the examination, when the result will be out and the new rules and regulations of the examination. Candidates not only from West Bengal but from different parts of India are eligible to sit for the examination. Those who want to be an engineer or doctor should sit for this examination.
