  • Pran Krishan Sikand - or Pran as he is popularly known will be awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke award this year. He turned 93 in February this year. In a career of six decades and 400 films he was noted as an arch villain of Bollywood and showed his versatility when he also did roles of a hero and character artist. He was known as a bad guy in a series of films including hits like 'Madhumati', 'Ziddi' and 'Ram Aur Shyam'. He was very popular as loveable Mangal Chacha in 'Upkar',  as the street-smart fraud in 'Victoria No.203', and a kind Pathan in 'Zanjeer'.
  • Bollywood 'Dream Girl' Hema Malini was given the P. C. Chandra award for her contribution to Indian cinema. P.C. Chandra Group Managing Director Prashant Chandra presented the award at a gala function in the Science City auditorium in Kolkata. Chandra stated that Hema Malini was one of the greatest and successful actresses in the history of Indian cinema.
  • Middle-order batsman Virat Kohli was nominated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the Arjuna Award for 2012. Kohli, who at present leads Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL 6, has been successful with the bat in every format of the game. The first batsman to make 10000 runs in Test cricket, the legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar, has been nominated for Dhyanchand Award for his lifetime achievement in cricket.

  • Amazon, in a bid to extend the global reach of its app distribution business, will now expand its Android-based app store to 200 countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, India, South Africa, South Korea, and even Papua New Guinea and Vatican City. Developers will be able to submit the apps from today. In the coming months the app store will be launched globally.
  • Wipro Ltd. recorded a net profit of Rs.6,636 crore (Rs.66.4 billion) for the fiscal 2012-13 (FY 2013), thus there was a 19 percent growth year-on-year (YoY) as per Indian accounting standards. In a regulatory filing which was done on Friday, the company stated that the total revenue for the fiscal under review (FY 2013) increased by 16 percent YoY to Rs.43,361 crore (Rs.433.6 billion).
  • The Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group stated that a consortium headed by Samena Capital was in advanced talks to acquire its international communications arm, Reliance Gobalcom. As per sources, the deal is worth $1.2 billion.
  • State Bank of Travancore (SBT), headquartered at Kerala, has recorded a growth of 20.49 percent in net profits in the fiscal 2012-13, thus making a total business of Rs.1,50,000 crore. SBT registered an operating profit of Rs.1,351 crore compared to Rs.1,249 crore during the fiscal 2011-12.

Though there is not confirmation from any side on this, but sources specify that talks were rolling four or five weeks back.   • Google celebrated India's first passenger train journey in its doodle which depicted a chugging train leaving behind a trail of smoke with a backdrop of a palace replete with domes and minarets.   • India will be hosting badminton's two premier events, the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup finals, later this year for the first time. Badminton Association of India (BAI) president Akhilesh Das Gupta stated it was a matter of pride that these events will be held in the country. The Thomas Cup (Men's World Team Championships) was first hosted in 1948-49 while the Uber Cup (Women's World Team Championships) came up in 1956-57.
  • On the final day of the Asian Wrestling Championship, India showed a spectacular performance as it ended with its best-ever medal haul in the tournament and clinched the title of champion in the freestyle category. India was followed by Iran and Mongolia. Amit Kumar Dhankhar (66kg), who replaced injured Sushil Kumar, won gold as India finished with a rich medal haul of two gold, one silver and six bronze medals. In the last edition, India had won a gold medal and four bronze medals. Amit's bout was both action and drama.

  • Instant messaging on chat apps, such as WhatsApp, has taken over the traditional SMS text message for the first time as per a new research. Around 19 billion messages were exchanged per day on chat apps in 2012, in comparison to 17.6 billion SMS texts as per survey by telecom and media consultancy firm Informa.
