  • President Francois Hollande named former Interior Minister Manuel Valls as France’s new prime minister Monday, just 24 hours after his Socialists suffered heavy losses in nationwide municipal elections.
  • President of India Pranab Mukherjee approved the name of Justice G Rohini (58) for appointment as the Next Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. With this approval, she will become the first women Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
  • Justice G Rohini was sworn in as the first woman Chief Justice of the Delhi high court on Monday. She succeeds Justice N V Ramana who was elevated to the Supreme Court in February.
  • Suresh K. Reddy appointed as India’s first Ambassador to the separate Indian Mission to ASEAN & East Asia Summit. Reddy, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1991 batch, is currently serving as Ambassador of India to Iraq.
  • Narendra Kothari has assumed charge as the Chairman and Managing Director of NMDC Limited. Earlier he was CEO of IISCO Steel Plant, Burnpur, Steel Authority of India Limited.
  • Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha was on Sunday sworn in as the 41st Chief Justice of India. He was administered the oath of office by President Pranab Mukharjee at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

  • Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) has won the ‘Innovation for India Awards 2014’, under Business Category, for developing Tamper Evident & Defraud Electricity Meter.
  • The queen of Britain on Thursday conferred the rank of Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) on former chairman of the Tata group, Ratan Tata. The KBE is one of the highest honours given by the queen to civilians.
  • Renowned poet, author and filmmaker Gulzar will be honoured with the 2013 Dadsaheb Phalke award, the country’ highest award in cinema given annually by the Government of India. The 79-year-old was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2004 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002.
  • Malayalam film-maker IV Sasi received the Lifetime Achievement Award instituted by Boby Chemmanur at a public function here on Friday. The award comprises a purse of Rs 10 lakh, a ‘ponnada’ and a citation.
  • Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who won the Polly Umrigar Trophy best player award in 2012-13 season, has been recommended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the prestigious Arjuna Award this year.

  • Ernesto Gainza has set a new Guinness record for skydiving using the world’s smallest parachute after he jumped from 14,000 feet with a canopy the size of a bed sheet. During his three-and-a-half-minute descent, Ernesto Gainza used a parachute measuring only 35 square feet.

  • Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao recorded a unanimous decision victory over WBO Welterweight Champion Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas. * Indonesia’s Simon Santoso pulled off an upset victory over world No 1 Lee Chong Wei to clinch the US$300,000 OUE Singapore Open badminton championships yesterday.
  • CSK star batsman Suresh Raina has become the first player to play 100 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Having played all his matches for Chennai Super Kings in IPL, Raina is closely followed by Rohit Sharma, who has played 98 matches in IPL.
  • Germany reached their first Fed Cup final since 1992 on Sunday where they will face the Czech Republic who has featured in three of the last four title matches. Germany beat Australia by 3-1 in the semi-finals.
  • India’s Chitra Magimairaj on Tuesday won the World Snooker senior title (40+ years) at Leeds, UK. Chitra blanked Alena Asmolova of Belarus 3-0 in the best-of-five final.
  • Chris Gayle became the first batsman in the history of T20 cricket to score 6000 runs when Royal Challengers Bangalore played Kings XI Punjab in Dubai on Monday. Gayle was bowled by Kings XI pacer Sandeep Sharma after a seven-ball 20 to take his run aggregate to 6012
