  • The ministry for skill development and entrepreneurship (MSDE) has named Cricket Icon Sachin Tendulkar as brand ambassador of the ‘Skill India’ campaign. The master blaster said that the campaign was meant for the talents of young generation and it is an opportunity for the nation to make full use of its young population. ‘Skill India’ campaign was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help train over 40 crore people in India in different skills.
  • The Constitutional Council of Nepal has selected Justice Sushila Karki (63) for the post of Chief Justice (CJ) of the Supreme Court of the country. With this selection she will become 26th chief justice of the apex court and the first female CJ in Nepal’s history.
  • Justice PK Mishra, former Chief Justice of Patna High Court, was appointed as the Lokayukta of Goa. The decision in this regard was taken by the state government. The announcement was made by the Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar after state government obtained the consensus of the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court and the Leader of Opposition in the Goa Assembly as stipulated in the Lokayukta Act, 2013.
  • Driss Deby elected as the President of Chad. With this, Deby became the incumbent President with 5th term in office in a lopsided first-round victory.

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Saudi Arabia’s highest civilian honour- the king Abdulaziz Sash. The Prime Minister was conferred the prestigious award by King Salman bin Abdulaziz at the Royal Court. The award is named after Abdulaziz Al Saud, the founder of the modern Saudi state.
  • Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has won the ‘Global Indian of the Year’ award. She was honoured at NRI of the Year award function held in Mumbai. The 42 year old actress has dedicated the award to her daughter Aaradhya. The NRI of the Year Award recognizes outstanding achievements of the Indian diaspora globally.
  • Bollywood actress Radhika Apte on 22 April 2016 bagged the best actress in an international narrative feature honour at Tribeca Film Festival 2016 for her performance in anthology film Madly. Radhika starred in Clean Shaven, which is a segment of Madly.

  • Reliance Industries director Nita Ambani and State Bank of India chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya have been ranked top two in Forbes’ “Asia 50 Power Businesswomen 2016” list, which acknowledges the inroads women are making in the business world, despite gender inequalities. American magazine Forbes has released 2016 “Asia’s 50 Power Businesswomen” list featuring business women from 14 countries.
  • According to agency Carat, India’s 2016 advertising growth rate will be the fastest at 12%, which is ahead of global average of 4.5%. The agency Carat is the part of the Dentsu Aegis Network. It urge the marketers of India to promote their goods and services, that is expected to propel the country’s advertising growth rate by a significant margin in 2016. It has also better India’s performance last year, when the advertising growth rate was 11%.

  • India has become the world’s fourth largest spender on defence, following a 13.1% increase in its 2016-17 defence budget, according to US research firm IHS Inc. India’s rise in the rankings from sixth position last year is a result of an increase in expenditure to $50.7 billion, combined with cuts to military spending by Russia and Saudi Arabia, where low oil prices have put considerable strain on their finances.
  • East Coast Railway (ECoR) has emerged as the largest freight loading Railway zone of Indian Railways in 2015-16. ECoR loaded 173.49 million tonnes of freight compared to 161.91 million tonnes achieved in the corresponding period previous year and registered an increase of 7.1 per cent. On the earnings side, ECoR earned about Rs 15,978.28 crore which is 14.13 per cent more than the corresponding period of previous financial year.
  • Rajasthan has become the first state to pass land title bill. State Assembly passed the Rajasthan Urban Land (Certification of Titles) Bills 2016. State government will set up an authority which will be headed by an Indian Administrative Service Officer.

  • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has declared total ban on the sale of all forms of alcohol with immediate effect. CM also said that while the alcohol licences of hotels, clubs and bars would be revoked, this ban would not affect army cantonments, as they are allowed to regulate the consumption and sale of liquor independently.
  • Delhi bans chewable tobacco for a yeari. The Delhi government has banned for one year the sale, purchase and storage of all forms of chewable tobacco, including “guthka, pan masala, khaini and zarda”, in the Capital.
  • Four of South Africa’s leading sports federations were banned by the sports minister from bidding for or hosting major international sports events for at least a year over their failures to create opportunities for black players. Rugby, cricket, athletics and netball all missed targets they agreed on with the government. Soccer was the only one to meet its target.
  • Union government issued a notification banning the import of dogs for commercial breeding. The imports are allowed only for research or defence purposes.

  • The famous American actor, voice artist and comedian Mr. Larry Drake has passed away due to cancer. He was 66 year old. The actor was best known for his role Benny Stulwicz in L.A. Law and the voice of Pops in Johnny Bravo. He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from Tulsa Edison High School and the University of Oklahoma.
  • Pop music superstar Prince Rogers Nelson, popularly known as Prince, died at his home in Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minneapolis. He was 57. He was found dead at his home, however, the cause of his death was not identified.

  • Priyadarshini Chatterjee, a Delhi girl was announced as the winner of FBB Femina Miss India World 2016 at the 53rd edition of the Femina Miss India beauty pageant held in Mumbai.   • Iconic Indian woman boxer Mary Kom has been named as the International Boxing Association (AIBA) ambassador for Women’s World Championship. She is one of the eight ambassadors for the upcoming World Championship of AIBA scheduled from May 19 to 27, 2016 in Astana, Kazakhstan.
  • Dipa Karmakar created history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics as she booked a berth for the Rio Games after a strong performance at the final qualifying and test event here. The 22-year-old garnered a total score of 52.698 points in the Olympics qualifying event to book a berth for artistic gymnastics in Rio Games to be held here in August.
  • Rafael Nadal defeated two-time defending champion Kei Nishikori of Japan to win the Barcelona Open of tennis 6-4, 7-5. This was Nadal’s 9th Barcelona Open title, and he has now won his opening 10 matches of the European clay-court season.
  • International Cricket Council (ICC) in its board meeting suspended the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) in view of government interference in the board. The suspension would stay in place until such time as the CAN becomes free of government interference and is properly structured to begin exploiting the tremendous cricket talent and opportunities that exist in Nepal.
