  • M.C. Mary Kom got the lone medal in boxing for the country at the Olympics. She also scripted history by being India's first woman boxer to win an Olympic medal? when she finished her campaign with bronze after losing the semi final match 6-11? to Britain's Nicola Adams?. In men's 49 kg category  Laishram Devendro Singh lost in the quarterfinal bout 18-23 to Ireland's Paddy Barnes which ended India's medal hopes in the boxing event.Mary Kom  became only the second Indian boxer after Vijender Singh to win an Olympic medal. 
  • Wrestler Sushil Kumar got a silver medal for the country in 66kg freestyle final today. He lost to Japan's Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu 1-3 in a bout which was his fourth fight of the day?. It seemed he ran out of steam. He scripted history nevertheless as he became the first individual athlete from India to win back-to-back medals at the Olympics.
  • Indian batsman Virat Kohli's name has been nominated in two categories for the International Cricket Council (ICC) awards to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on September 15. The cricketer who was the country's most prolific run-getter in the last one year, has been shortlisted for ICC Cricketer of the Year award and ODI Cricketer of the Year. 
  • Rahul Dravid's name has been recommended for the Padma Bhushan while Gautam Gambhir's for the Padma Shri awards by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. After Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan?, Padma Bhusan is the country's third highest civilian honour.
  • Olympic medalists Vijay Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt ?were presented with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award ? by President Pranab Mukherjee in the grand ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This event saw a record 25 Arjuna Awards presented as this was an Olympic year. The award comprises a statuette, citation and cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh each.?

  • A two-day Indian TV Fest will be held in Goa on November 2-3, the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) ?announced. There will be interactive seminars, key-note sessions, events, content, business services technology and service pavilions, performances and sporting activities in the festival. 
  • Telecom tariffs would increase from 37 to 49 paise per minute as the cabinet has decided to fix the reserve price for the 2G spectrum auction at Rs.14,000 crore per 5 MHz in the 1,800 MHz band. This was stated by an industry lobby for GSM operators.
  • Kolkata-based infrastructure and construction equipment financing company Srei Infrastructure Finance Ltd. (SIFL) and French financial major BNP Paribas have given approval for equity investment of up to Rs.2 billion in their joint venture, Srei Equipment Finance (P) Ltd. SIFL informed Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) that the funds would be raised through public issue of secured, redeemable, non-convertible debentures, not exceeding Rs.2 billion, in one or more tranches. 
  • There was a growth of 17 percent in Personal computers (PC) sales in the country during the second quarter of 2012 over the same period of the previous calendar year. There was a sale of nearly 2.9 million units as per the research firm Gartner.

  • In a Sikh gurudwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin?, six people were shot dead and three were injured on Sunday August 6. The gunman was himself shot dead after that. This incident happened in the morning and a police SWAT team entered the gurudwara before noon and brought uninjured people out of the building.
  • In an accident where an overcrowded bus fell into a gorge in Himachal Pradesh, 51 people, including 18 women, were killed and 46 others injured in Chamba in Himachal Pradesh as per the police reports.The private bus skidded off the road and fell into the 300-feet deep gorge near Rajera, which is at a distance of 10 km from Chamba.
  • 27 people have lost lives in Rajasthan due to heavy rains, four more deaths were reported in Sikar district on Thursday leading the count to 27.Torrential downpour continued to cause havoc and disrupt normal life in several districts.
  • Collision of two Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters in mid-air near Jamnagar in Gujarat led to death of nine defence personnel, including five officers. This was one of the worst accidents in recent times. The accident occurred at the Sarmat range near Jamnagar, about 275 km from Ahmedabad at 12.05 p.m.

  • Government has banned bulk SMSes for 15 days in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in a bid to control the panic which has led to exodus of thousands of people belonging to northeast from southern states.
  • Air India expects to include the first of its new Boeing-787 Dreamliners by end of this month as the aircraft has got all the regulatory clearances from the Federal Aviation Administration? for flying to India. The aircraft is expected to be in India in a week's time. 
  • Delhi will soon become the first kerosene-free city with the launch of 'Kerosene-free Delhi' scheme?on Tuesday?, August 21. This scheme  350,000 families using kerosene oil will get a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder and a cooking stove for free.

  • Union minister and former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh passed away at a Chennai hospital after prolonged illness. Doctors were to give him liver and kidney transplants but the donor died before this could be done. Deshmukh was brought in critical condition from Mumbai on August 6. 
  • Veteran actor and theatre artist A.K. Hangal passed away morning after a long illness which was worsened by a hip fracture. He was cremated in the afternoon and his son Vijay performed the last rites.

  • Anna Hazare and his team made an announcement, August 2 that they would call off their indefinite fast against corruption, August 3 at 5 pm, They also made a proposal of forming a 'political alternative' to tackle the 'unresponsive' government. 
  • UPA candidate Hamid Ansari won comfortably in the vice-presidential election August 7. He defeated NDA nominee Jaswant Singh by 238 votes. The result was announced by Lok Sabha Secretary General T.K. Viswanathan, the returning officer for the poll. Ansari got 490 first preference votes out of 728 valid votes cast while Jaswant Singh polled 238 votes.
  • Yoga guru Baba Ramdev returned to Ramlila Maidan? again after the fast last year which saw a midnight raid by the police.This time he is on a three-day fast to demand  government's initiative in a stringent Lokpal bill and getting black money back from abroad. He also warned of a revolution if the government did not give in to his demands. 
  • Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has made an announcement of number of measures for the people in Delhi which includes regularisation of over 900 unauthorised colonies before the assembly elections which are due in November 2013.
