  • The Obama administration has announced to appoint yet another Indian American to a key administrative post, after it named Smita Singh as member of the president's Global Development Council.
  • The leader of Liberal Democratic Party Shinzo Abe has become Japan's new prime minister. Abe, who led the LDP to a landslide victory in the general election after three years in the opposition, will form a new Cabinet later in the day with his close allies.
  • Ratan Naval Tata retired as chairman of the $100-billion Tata Group which he had joined 50 years ago. There was no event, speeches and he was not present at Bombay House to see the transition. Cyrus Pallonji Mistry, 44 will take the responsibility as the 6th chairman of the group.
  • The Supreme Court lawyer Dayan Krishnan has been appointed as the special public prosecutor by the city police to conduct trial in the December 16 gangrape of a paramedical student who succumbed to injuries during the wee hours on Saturday at a Singapore hospital.

  • Bihar's public grievance redressal website has been given the Silver Icon Web Ratna Award 2012. The award was given by the Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology Kapil Sibbal to S. Siddharth, Bihar's secretary of urban development and public grievances, in New Delhi on Monday.
  • United States President Barack Obama has been named Time Magazine's 2012 Person of the Year, with the US publication calling him the 'Architect of New America'. This is second time in four years that Obama has been named person of the year by the publication. He had received the title in 2008.

  • Foreign tourists arriving at Himachal Pradesh will be able to register themselves through an interactive web portal with various foreigner registration officers as informed by the Director General of Police (I.D.) Bhandari. He further added that the tourists can also file complaints on case of accidents or crimes at the 'Kanoon Vyavastha' web portal.
  • There was a recommendation by an inter-ministerial group to lower the base price for 1,800 mega hertz (Mhz) spectrum by 30 percent for four circles which were not sold in the auction conducted last month.The four circles include Delhi, Mumbai, Karnataka and Rajasthan.
  • The Indian government’s project of straight transfer of subsidies to beneficiaries’ bank accounts will start from the first day of 2013.   • Megastar Amitabh Bachchan superstar Sridevi were voted as the most admired celebrities according to the 'Vuclip Icons of the Year 2012' mobile survey.  Amitabh got 43 percent votes. Sridevi, who returned to Bollywood after 15 years with 'English Vinglish', surged ahead of  Kareena Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Vidya Balan with 33 percent votes.

  • Arch rivals India and Pakistan reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup for the blind after their imposing wins against South Africa and Nepal respectively in the last league matches in Bangalore.India will face Sri Lanka while Pakistan will take on England in the twin semifinals on Wednesday.
  • India won the men's final of the World Kabaddi Cup for the third time continuously at Ludhiana on Saturday by defeating ?arch-rivals Pakistan 59-22. The match was dominated by the Indian players and they maintained a lead initially and reached  9-0.
