  • Anil Kumar Sinha, IPS officer of Bihar cadre (1979 batch), was on Tuesday appointed by Union Government as the new CBI Director. The decision of appointment was taken by a committee, headed by the Prime Minister himself. The final decision was taken by the PM, from a shortlisted list of 40 officers, after consultation with leader of Parliament’s main opposition party as well as Chief Justice of India.

  • Indian government owned ONGC Videsh has won exploration permit in New Zealand’s 14TAR-R1 Exploration Block Taranaki offshore basin. Minister of Energy and Resources, Simon Bridges, awarded exploration permit to ONGC Videsh during a ceremony at Wellington. After winning this bid in New Zealand, ONGC Videsh now is working on 36 projects spread in 17 countries.  
  • During April-June period of 2015, Reliance Jio Infocomm is going to make one of the largest launches in the telecom sector. During this period, the company will make available 4G LTE services in eight hundred cities across India. The service can be accessed by almost all devices with the help of ‘mi-fi devices’ and 4G Dongles.
  • Walmart, one of the biggest supermarket chains of the USA, is all set to open its newest store in Agra. This store is going to come up in mid-2015 and will have wholesale outlet that will sell anything and everything, including groceries, electronic goods, and all kinds of apparels.   • Snapdeal has forged an alliance with India Post to help artisans and weavers of Varanasi to get more market access, previously unexplored. Per the plan, facilitation desks will be opened in post offices of Varanasi where India Post and Snapdeal will work jointly.

  • Anil Sinha, the new director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that they are likely to reveal all those involved in the Saradha chit fund scam. The comment came after criticism from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who accused the CBI and said that it is working as a frontal organisation of the Bharatiya Janata Party like RSS and Bajrang Dal.
  • US swimmer Michael Phelps has pleaded guilty to drunken driving, as per media reports. The Olympic gold medalist has been given a one-year suspended prison term and has been sentenced to 18 months of supervised probation. 29-year old Phelps was arrested in Baltimore in September after he tested at nearly twice the legal alcohol limit. He was caught for speeding at 84mph in a 45mph zone.
  • Suresh Prabhu, Union Railway Minister, has reportedly asked ex-CAG Vinod Rai, to head a Railway Board committee for suggesting ways to Indian Railways for more transparency. Vinod Rai has become a well known figure when he helped unearth some of the biggest scams in India in recent times, including 2G Spectrum and Coal allocation scams.

  • As per media report, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to attend a meet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Most likely State Industries Minister Amit Mitra will attend the meeting at her place to discuss the future of the Planning Commission.
  • The Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Bill, 2014 was passed by the Lok Sabha by voice vote on Friday to auction coal blocks. The Supreme Court earlier this September had cancelled the auctioning of the 204 mining blocks.
  • Jharkhand BJP MLAs have chosen Raghubar Das as their leader of Jharkhand Assembly, clearing his way to become the next Chief Minister of the state. This will be the first time in the 14-year history of Jharkhand that the state is going to get a non-tribal CM. It became easier for Das to become the leading contender for the coveted post because Arjun Munda, tribal BJP leader and also ex-CM of Jharkhand, lost the Assembly election.
  • Civic body polls in Chhattisgarh is going to be held today across 51 bodies. It includes twenty two Nagar Panchayats, nineteen Municipal Councils, and ten Municipal Corporations. 5,130 candidates are there in the fray.

  • Smriti Irani, Union Education Minister, cleared the air that the students don’t have to come to school on Christmas Day for celebrating ‘Good Governance day’, commemorating ex-PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday. Smriti Irani, through a tweet, said that schools will remain closed on December 25. She called the circulated news mischievous.

  • Indian hockey team makes its way to the quarter finals by securing a convincing win over Netherland. India stunned the second ranked Netherland by defeating them 3-2 and finished third in Pool B. After this win Indian hockey team is going to face Belgium in the quarters.
  • Indian ace shuttlers Kidambi Srikanth and Saina Nehwal moved one step forward towards semi finals of World Super Series Finals. While 6th ranked Srikant beat Indonesia’s 8th ranked Tommy Sugiarto by 21-18 21-13, fourth ranked Saina beat Sung Ji Hyun of South Korea by 21-12, 21-18
  • Ankita Raina of India has entered into the final of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament. She defeated Romanian Cristina Ene 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at the Deccan Gymkhan. Till date Radhika Tulpule is the only Indian who had won this title in 2001 by defeating Archana Venkatraman in three sets.
  • India’s Ankita Raina defeated 19-year-old British rival Katy Dunne 6-2 6-2 to win her first $25,000 ITF singles title at the Deccan Gymkhana in Pune. Ankita expressed her happiness for being the first woman to bring the title to India after 14 years. This gives Ankita 50 WTA points and a price money of $3,919. 294 ranked Ankita also said that she wants to improve her world ranking and her aim is to reach 200 this year.
  • Mahendra Singh Dhoni has announced his retirement from International Test Cricket, making way for youngster Virat Kohli to become the next Test Cricket Captain of India. Dhoni has till now played 90 test matches among which he was the skipper in 60 matches. In terms of total test match wins, ‘Mahi’ is the most successful test skipper till now with 27 wins under his belt, bettering over the earlier best of 21 matches under Saurav Ganguly.
