  • Justice Tirath Singh Thakur was sworn in as 43rd Chief Justice of India by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. The swearing ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. 63-year-old Thakur was the senior most judge of the apex court and took over from incumbent Justice HL Dattu who retired on 2 December 2015.

  • Japanese PM Shinzo Abe agreed transferring technology for increasing production of arms in India, thereby giving a significant boost to “Make in India” project. After signing high speed rail agreement, India has pledged for Indo-Japan joint exercises. 
  • Peace talks between India and Pakistan may lead to a hurdle as Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit met separatist leaders. The meeting came at a time when External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said in Lok Sabha that both the estranged neighbours need to talk to each other without any 3rd party mediation. 
  • In-line with its stiff rival SpiceJet, Jet Airways has announced a cut down on the prices of tickets on domestic routes. The tickets would be available at a discounted price of Rs 716 (excluding taxes) and the offer is open for bookings done till December 31, 2015 for travel between January 15, 2016 and April 12, 2016.?

  • Just two months after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake destroyed thousands of houses and killed over 300 people in Afghanistan and Pakistan, strong tremor of 6.4-magnitude was recorded near Afghanistan- Tajikistan border on late Friday night. Extent of the tremor was felt in northern India, especially in Delhi, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and NCR (National Capital Region).

  • A Ranchi-bound Border Security Force (BSF) plane carrying ten people, including three BSF officers, crashed at around 9:50 a.m. near theDelhiAirport. The crash took place after the technicians lost contact with the aircraft’s ground control. 
  • An explosion took place at a plastic scrap workshop in the Malda district of West Bengal. Reports say two people have died and two others have been injured as an aftermath of this explosion.
  • Nine persons were killed and 15 injured when an accident took place at the Mehta village, situated 15 kilometers from Amritsar. The accident occurred after a private bus hit a ‘peter rehra’ (a homemade motorised car carrying labourers) from behind, said the SSP of Amritsar, Jasdeep Singh Saini.?

  • The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community has decided to take the Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk on 13 December.   • Tata Institute of Fundamental Research’s scientists have opined that Astrosat’s (first space observatory of India) Large Area Xenon Proportional Counters (LAXPC) has been successful in generation of good data, which when compared with the other similar instruments is better by a factor of 5.
  • Delhi High Court has refused to stay release of the juvenile criminal out the 6 rapists of the infamous 2012 Delhi gang rape case. HC has observed that as per current juvenile justice act, a juvenile criminal can’t be detained more than 3 years. 
  • With an aim to enhance the passenger revenue collections, the Indian Railways has decided to hike the Tatkal ticket charges from December 25. This would mean for every Tatkal booking in the Sleeper class, you’ll have to spend Rs 200 instead of Rs 175. Also, a ticket for AC-3 would cost you Rs 400 instead of Rs 350.

  • Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been acquitted by the Bombay High Court in the infamous thirteen year old hit-and-run case, which led to death of one person and injured four others. Justice A R Joshi, while giving his verdict, said that the prosecution was not convincing in proving that the actor was driving the vehicle and he was drunk when the incident occurred.

  • Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra Chief Minister has launched a project to bring south Mumbai under the surveillance of over 1,300 CCTV cameras so as to prevent crimes and increase policing. The installation of these cameras was a part of the project to install 6,000 CCTV cameras in the whole city before the anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks in 2016.
  • The AAP government has passed three bills in order to introduce reform in the education system of Delhi and regulate the private schools. The bills which have been passed are: the Delhi School (Verification of Accounts and Refund of Excess Fee Bill) 2015, The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Delhi Amendment) Bill and the Delhi School Education (Amendment) Bill 2015.
  • Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi passed the Delhi Jan Lokpal Bill, 2015. Two amendments on the concerned bill, as per the suggestion of social activist Anna Hazare, have also being passed.
  • Rajya Sabha finally passed the Juvenile Justice Bill in the presence of Nirbhaya’s parents. The Bill will now be sent to the President of India for his approval. Once the new law is in place, those between 16 to 18 years of age can be tried as adults for heinous crimes such as rape and murder.

IAAF justified their decision by saying that they want more athletes to participate in the grand world event. 
  • Qualifiers of Rio Olympics, Apurvi Chandela and Chain Singh have respectively won gold medals in Women's 10M Air Rifle event and Men's 50M Rifle 3 Positions during 59th National Shooting Championship.
  • Indian campaign at 20th Avadh Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships has been commendable as Indian men won gold, followed by a silver win by the women’s team. It has been a historic moment for the men’s team because it is only the second time in twenty editions of the championship that India won gold.
  • Indian boxing sensation 30 year old Vijendra Singh has easily won his third consecutive match in the mid-weight professional boxing category. In the latest match, Vijendra Singh played against 29 year old Samet Hyuseinov of Bulgaria at Manchester Arena in Manchester and won the 75kg category match, having six rounds, easily.
  • Ashok Kumar, an international level Wrestling referee from India, has been selected among the 9 Asian referees selected by United World Wrestling (UWW) to officiate during 2016 Rio Olympics. This is a historic moment for India as this is the first time ever that a wrestling referee from India will officiate at the Olympic Games. 
  • A power-packed 105 runs were scored by Captain Parthiv Patel which helped Gujarat defeat the former champions Delhi by an impressive 139 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy Cricket Series. Having dismissed Delhi for 134 in just 32.3 overs, Gujarat made it ‘big’ by scoring 273 runs.
