  • Senior British officer Cressida Dick has been appointed as the commissioner of London's Metropolitan Police, becoming the first woman to lead Scotland Yard in its 187-year history.

  • Surgeon P Raghu Ram has been awarded with the prestigious Dr B C Roy national award 2016 for outstanding service in the field of socio medical relief.
  • Priyanka Chopra-produced Marathi film 'Ventilator' has won best screenplay award at the 15th Pune International Film Festival (PIFF).
  • Renowned Hindi Scholar, litterateur and playwright Surendra Verma (75) was selected for the prestigious Vyas Samman 2016. He was chosen for this award for his novel Kaatna Shami Ka Vriksha : Padma Pankhuri Ki Dhar Se, published in 2010.
  • Tamil, Hindi and Sanskrit scholar and author P. Jayaraman will be awarded with the 'Sahitya Akademi Translation Award' for the year 2016 along with 22 language translators.

  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented the Budget 2017-18 in the Lok Sabha. This is his fourth budget as Finance Minister. It is the first time that Union and railway budget have been presented together. Government has marginally revised the GDP growth rate for 2015-16 to 7.9 per cent from the earlier estimate of 7.6 percent.
  • The Finance Act, 2016 amended the Income-tax Act, 1961 (the Act) to provide that 40% of the amount payable to the employee subscriber of NPS on his closure of account or his opting out of the scheme, shall be exempt from tax.
  • The National Productivity Day was observed on February 12 with a theme - 'From Waste to Profits-through Reduce, Recycle and Reuse'.

  • The Odisha government accorded in-principle approval to a proposal for hosting the 14th Men’s Hockey World Cup-2018 in Bhubaneswar.The event is scheduled to be held at Kalinga Stadium here from November 28 to December 16, 2018.
  • Sourabh Varma defeated Lakshya Sen to win the men’s singles title at the 81st Senior Badminton National Championship. 
  • South African AB de Villiers passed the 9,000-run milestone in one-day internationals in the third ODI against New Zealand in Wellington. De Villiers is the 18th player and second South African behind Jacques Kallis to reach the 9,000 mark.
