  • Ami Bera, a California-based Indian-American physician, was sworn in as member of the United States House of Representatives, becoming only the third from the community to enter the Congress.

  • Composer Mychael Danna received the best original score motion picture award for 'Life of Pi' at the 70th edition of the prestigious annual Golden Globe awards at Los Angeles. Danna edged past Alexandre Desplat ('Argo'), Dario Marianelli ('Anna Karenina'), Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, Reinhold Heil ('Cloud Atlas') and John Williams ('Lincoln') to get the prestigious trophy.
  • Rahul Dravid and M.C. Mary Kom were named for the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award while six other sportspersons were been included in the list of Padma Shri awardees. Padma Shri Awards would be given to London Olympic silver medallist shooter Vijay Kumar, bronze medal winning wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, para athlete Hosanagara Nagarajegowda Girisha, boxer Ngangom Dingko Singh, mountaineer Premlata Agrawal, and rower Bajrang Lal Takhar.

  • An application made to set up crude oil petroleum refinery at a capital of $28 billion and the purchase of a new car brought the Income Tax (IT) officials to an agricultural product trader's house in Tirupur in Tamil Nadu.
  • The emerging Indian electronics industry is projected to touch $94 billion over the next three years. As stated by India Semiconductor Association (ISA) chairman Satya Gupta,'The Indian electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) and semiconductor industry is on a growth trajectory of 9.9 percent CAGR (cumulative average growth rate) to register a turnover of $94 billion (Rs.5,061 billion/Rs.5.1 trillion) in 2015 from $65 billion in 2011.'

  • India and Bangladesh signed an extradition treaty and a much friendly visa regime, as New Delhi lauded Dhaka's role contributing towards addressing India's security concerns, that is in controlling Indian insurgent groups operating out of Bangladesh. The agreements signed during the visit of Indian Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to Dhaka, also saw both the sides affirm their resolve to 'act against elements inimical to both countries'.

  • Vishal Bhardwaj's upcoming rustic drama 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola' has got a U/A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Bhardwaj is happy that the movie will reach a wider audience now as it is not restricted with an A rating. The film had got into issues with the censor board with Pankaj Kapur's character uttering 'Pancho', which, the CBFC felt, seemed as a Hindi expletive.

  • Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy 2013 which aims to position India among the top five global scientific powers by 2020. The first copy of the policy which stresses on both STI for people and people for STI was presented to President Pranab Mukerjee at the inaugural session of the centenary session of the Indian Science Congress here at Kolkata.
  • India may be building the world's largest solar telescope on the foothills of the Himalayas in Ladakh by year-end? to analyze the basic processes taking place on the Sun. The  2-metre class, state-of-the-art National Large Solar Telescope (NLST), built by Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), will enable the Indian scientists to initiate advanced research for studying the Sun's atmosphere.
  • K Chiranjeevi, the Union Tourism Minister, has stated that India needs to quicken the pace at which international tourists are visiting the country. The minister opines that India is quickly becoming one of the top tourist destinations. He also feels that the number of foreign tourists visiting the country has gone up in the recent years.
  • India's 64th Republic Day celebrations started when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid homage to the unknown soldier at the India Gate war memorial in the heart of the capital. The three service chiefs were in attendance and the Prime Minister was greeted when he arrived at the World War I monument by Defence Minister A.K. Antony. He placed a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti eternal flame, an honor guard reversed arms and the buglers sounded the Last Post. Two minutes silence was observed after this.

  • The Kashmir valley is in for the heaviest snowfall of the season. The snowfall which began evening after rains during the day is set to continue for the night and Friday as per the local MET office.
  • India is 'an incredibly important country in the world', the White House has stated and President Barack Obama will go on strengthening the US relationship with New Delhi in his second term. It was also specified that Obama will think of it as a success if at the end of his second term India-US bilateral relationship is more strong than at present.

  • Marathi actor and comedian Prashant Damle will set the Guinness World Records with his 10,700th show, staged in Mumbai. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Home Minister R.R. Patil, Cultural Affairs Minister Sanjay Deotale, and Mumbai Mayor Sunil Prabhu were there to see the performance and later on felicitated Damle in the presence of top personalities  from Marathi cinema. 
  • The newly-appointed Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi stated that the country and its people were his life and asked for a 'complete transformation' of the party system. He also said that more national level leaders 'who can run the country' should be created.
  • Lata Mangeshkar reminisced about Ae mere watan ke logon song that continues to touch hearts at patriotic celebrations in the country. It completed 50 years ago this January 27, since it was first sung to an audience comprising leaders of India's freedom struggle. She remembered how she did not have time to do the song and was on verge of refusing to sing the song but Kavi Pradeep insisted and later on she had to give in.

  • The Maharashtra government gave an order for a judicial probe into the Jan 6 communal riots in Dhule which killed six people were left over 200 injured. This is after a magisterial inquiry was ordered earlier into the incidents.Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stated that a retired judge would conduct the inquiry and the report would be submitted at the earliest.

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav released an ambitious smart card driving licence scheme in 10 transport offices in the state. The scheme, which uses the National Informatics Centre-developed software Saarthi, was first launched at transport offices in Lucknow, Agra, Allahabad, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Meerut, Jhansi, Aligarh and Barabanki districts.

  • Twitter introduced a number of enhancements to embedded tweets and now they would appear more like tweets you see on Twitter.com. It is now easier to embed tweets just by clicking the more button and selecting the 'Embed Tweet' option. They have the photos, videos, and article summaries below the text of the embedded tweet, and it will also have retweet and favorite count, so readers can gauge how popular a particular post might be.

  • Pakistan opener Nasir Jamshed has has jumped 45 places to 31st position in the latest Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen while Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni came back to the top five. Pakistan's duo of Saeed Ajmal and Junaid Khan gained position, while Mohammad Hafeez became the number-one ranked ODI all-rounder, a career first. 
  • London Olympics quarterfinalist Parupalli Kashyap set a new career high as he reached the rank of World No.11 in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings which was released. Kashyap, who was earlier ranked as career-best 14th after winning the Syed Modi International India Grand Prix Gold in Lucknow in December.
  • Delhi Waveriders' legendary Dutch drag-flicker Taeke Taekema was ruled out of the Hockey India League (HIL) with a back injury.He was bought for Rs.13.6 lakh by the Delhi-franchise for the league starting January 14. Ajitpal Singh, the chief adviser of Delhi Waveriders termed it was a big loss but there were enough replacements.
  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has agreed to re-look into its rule book after Mohun Bagan appealed against the two-year ban imposed on it by the game's supreme body for leaving an I-League match midway against East Bengal.The AIFF executive committee will have a meeting on Tuesday to consider Mohun Bagan's appeal.
  • Jharkhand's capital is all ready to host its first international cricket match when India will take on England in a One-Day International (ODI). The  newly built JSCA International Stadium has a capacity of 39,000 here.
  • Mumbai wrapped up the Services innings for 240 to take the first innings lead and reach the final of the Ranji Trophy for a record 44th time on the sixth and reserve day of the semi-final match here at the Palam A Ground. Services started the day with 164/3 but lost the last seven wickets only for 76 runs in comparison to Mumbai's 454/8 declared.
  • India won over England by five wickets in the fourth One-Day International (ODI) to take a 3-1 lead in the five-match series at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium. England batting first after they lost the toss made 257/7 in the 50 overs, which India chased down in 47.3 overs. Suresh Raina was the top scorer with an unbeaten 89 off 79 balls. Rohit Sharma finally met the expectations and scored 83 runs.

  • The Internet, the cheap communications system which brought revolution in communication that changed the lives of billions of people across the world, completed 30 years. The computer network officially started the technological revolution when it was chosen over earlier networking systems on January 1 1983 on a day known as 'flag day'.  On this day the US Department of Defence (DoD)-commissioned ARPANET network fully shifted to the Internet protocol suite (IPS) communications system. 
  • Social media giant Facebook launched a new tool -- Graph Search which would let users carry on targeted searches for people, places, photos and interests on the site.Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg stated, 'You should theoretically be able to ask Facebook 'Who are my friends who live in San Francisco?' and Graph Search should be able to return an answer to you.'
  • HTC has launched India’s costliest smartphone, Butterfly. It comes at Rs 45,900, though its official price is Rs 49,990 and thus it is much above Apple iPhone 5's base model and Nokia Lumia 920 in terms of pricing, and way ahead Samsung Galaxy S III which is now available at Rs 32000. HTC Butterfly, known as Droid DNA has a 5-inch Super LCD3 screen with a pixel density of 441ppi, it supports full HD videos.
