  • Arvind Panagariya, a renowned economist who teaches at US’s Columbia University, has been appointed Vice Chairman of the newly constituted planning body - Niti Aayog, which was formed after replacing 65-year old Planning Commission. Panagariya is widely known as a free market economist, who worked as Asian Development Bank’s Chief Economist earlier.
  • DMK unanimously elected 92-year old M Karunanidhi as Chief of the party. It is the twelvth time he has been elected as DMK chief. While MK Stalin, younger son of Karunanidhi, has become Treasurer for the second time, M Kanimozhi (Chief’s daughter) has become Secretary of Women's Wing. 
  • Ministry of Information And Broadcasting has announced that new members along with chief for Central Board of Film Certification have been appointed. While Pahlaj Nihalani became the new CBFC chief, nine other members including Ramesh Patange, Vanio Tripathi Tikoo, Jeevitha, Syed Abdul Bari, Ashok Pandit, Chandra Prakash Dwivedi, S. Ve Shekhar, Mihir Bhuta, and George Baker have been appointed too with immediate effect.
  • Union Government appointed S Jaishankar, Indian ambassador to the US till yesterday who was due to retire by January 31, as the new Foreign Secretary by removing Sujatha Singh, who still had around 7-months in her tenure, with immediate effect.

  • National Space Society, a US-based organisation, has conferred 2015 Space Pioneer Award to the team of ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission programme. Prize has been conferred under science and engineering category. 
  • Sources reveal that the original list of 148 names for Padma Bhushan awards have been cleared by intelligence, which consists names such as yesteryear's ‘angry young man’ Amitabh Bachchan, South Indian film superstar Rajnikanth, yesteryear senior actor Dilip Kumar, senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, yoga guru Baba Ramdev, and many others.

  • Petrol and diesel price today was cut by Rs 2.42 per litre and Rs 2.25 a litre respectively. The reduction was expected to be double but government had increased the excise duty on both these products by Rs 2 per litre. Since August it is the ninth reduction in Petrol price and fifth in diesel since October. 
  • With change of management at SpiceJet, the financially troubled airliner is trying hard to get back its lost market share in the expanding domestic airline market by offering tickets at discounted price of Rs. 1,499. The sale will start from today and will continue for three days. With these tickets customers can travel from February 15 to June 30. 
  • Government by selling 10 per cent stake in Coal India Limited (CIL) has mobilised Rs 22,557.63 crore making it the biggest disinvestment by any state-run company so far. Close to 5 percent discount was offered to the investors with a floor price fixed at Rs 358 a piece. With this exercise, the government's share in CIL has come down to 79.65 per cent.

  • The restructured Planning Commission of India will be known as ‘Neeti Ayog,’ according to media reports. Sources indicate that the new body will comprise 4 Union Ministers along with 5 Full-time members, who will be experts from different fields. To give a final shape to the new planning body, PM held discussion with chief ministers of various states during early-December 2014.
  • World Bank has predicted that Indian Economy will increase at the rate of 7 per cent by the financial year 2016-17, thereby catching up with the growth rate of China. The three factors that World Bank believes recovered the economy are Modi government’s economic measures undertaken in the last six months, lower interest rates, and dipping international crude oil price.
  • Axis bank has released its Q3 report, revealing a significant jump in its net profit. Available data shows that net profit during third quarter of 2014-15 financial year has increased by 18.5 per cent when compared with that of corresponding period last year. Net profit increased from Rs. 1,604 crore during Q3 2013-14 to Rs. 1,900 crore during Q4 2014-15.

  • Bombay High Court ruled out the challenge made by government on higher fare charged by Reliance Infrastructure for metro ride from Mumbai’s Ghatkopar to Versova on existing lines. The private company had reported to the court that by charging a maximum fare of Rs. 13 for longest ride, it is losing up to Rs. 85 lakh every day. 
  • US President Barack Obama with his wife Michelle Obama have arrived in India and welcomed by PM Narendra Modi. Union Minister Piyush Goyal and other dignitaries were also present to welcome the President. Thousands of security personnel and approximately 15,000 security cameras will keep a tight vigil on Delhi.

  • R K Laxman, the legendary cartoonist who gave billions of voiceless people of India their voice through his cartoon character ‘Common Man’ passed away in Pune due to multiple organ failure. He was 94 years old.
  • Subhash Ghising, who spearheaded the violent movement demanding different state for Gorkhas in hilly areas of West Bengal during 1980s, died in a Delhi hospital yesterday at the age of 79 years after prolonged ailment.

  • By winning the Mayor's election in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh Municipal Corporation, a eunuch created a history. Independent candidate Madhu Kinnar belonging to Dalit community defeated the BJP's Mahaveer Guruji and won the Mayoral election by 4,537 votes. 
  • Governor's rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir as no party staked a claim to form government in the state. The Governor House spokesperson has said that the resignation of the outgoing CM Omar Abdullah has been accepted with a request to continue his services till some alternate arrangements. 
  • Election Commission is all set to announce schedule of the upcoming Delhi Assembly Election 2015. Available information suggest that the election to form the 70-seat Delhi assembly will take place anywhere during mid-February 2015.
  • Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee Chief (DPCC) Arvinder Singh Lovely who was earlier selected to contest election from Gandhi Nagar has decided not to contest 2015 Assembly elections. His decision came after Ajay Maken's appointment as the head of the Campaign Committee for Delhi Assembly elections 2015.

  • Twitter has started rolling its new 'While You Were Away' feature. The microblogging site had announced the feature in November last year. 'While You Were Away' will put the 'best tweets' of user from his or her network at the top of the feed. So when the user will open the app, he or she will see the best tweets. Twitter has not disclosed the way it will determine the best tweets.
  • Twitter users can now see the translation for tweets as Twitter has partnered with Bing to introduce tweet translation feature. The translation is available for forty language pairs for browsers on Apple iOS system, Android and Twitter's personal TweetDeck platform.

  • Indian women weightlifters, Manalisha Sonowal and Mohin Chavan, won two Gold Medals at Junior Women Weightlifting Championship, held in Qatar’s Doha. While Mohin Chavan won Gold in 44kg Youth Girls category by lifting a total weight of 131 kg (58 kg + 73 kg), Manalisha Sonowal won Gold Medal in 48kg Junior Women category by lifting 154 kg weight (66 kg + 88 kg).
  • Virat Kohli is all set to lead Indian cricket team as permanent test captain for the first time as Sydney gears up to host the final Test match between Australia and India at Sydney Cricket Ground, starting on Tuesday. 
  • India announced its 15-member Indian Cricket team for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup of 2015, to be played during February and March in New Zealand and Australia. Indian team will be led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the Vice Captain of the team will be Virat Kohli. The fast bowling squad includes Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The team includes two spinners - Ravinchandran Ashwin and Axar Patel. Stuart Binny and Ravindra Jadeja’s name made to the list as all-rounder players.
  • BCCI has unveiled Indian Cricket team’s new apparel for the upcoming World Cup cricket tournament 2015. BCCI’s official partner Nike has made the new apparel kit. Available information say that the every new apparel kit, containing jersey as well as lower, is manufactured from thirty-three recycled plastic bottles. 
  • Sania Mirza has reached her career best rank yet again this season after securing a win in the doubles match against Bethanie Mattek-Sands by partnering with Su-Wei Hsieh at Sydney’s WTA Apia International. 
  • Michael Nobbs, former hockey coach of India, has recently opined that the time is ripe for Indian national hockey management to select a home-grown coach who is akin with the psychology of players and processes of Indian hockey.
  • Indian ace tennis player Mahesh Bhupati and his men’s doubles partner Jurgen Melzer lost to Diego Schwartzman-Horacio Zeballos duo in straight sets (4-6, 3-6). The game was over in just one hour time, 67 minutes to be precise. Bhupati-Melzer duo committed lots of unforced errors (27), giving their opponents extra mileage in winning the game
  • Saina Nehwal, the ace woman shuttler of India, wins Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold Badminton Tournament’s women's singles title in a nail biting match. She defeated Carolina Marin of Spain by 19-21, 25-23, 21-16.
