  • India and Pakistan have extended their agreement relating to rail communication by mutual consent through diplomatic channels for next three years. The agreement, signed on 28 June, 1976, enables India-Pakistan rail communication both in respect of goods and passenger traffic.

  • Air Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria became a Deputy Chief of the Air Staff on 1st January, a post that oversees the critical procurement process of the force. With a career spanning over more than 35 years, Bhadauria has commanded a Jaguar Squadron and a premier Air Force base in the South Western Sector.
  • The Uttar Pradesh Police is headed by Director General of Police (DGP) S. JAVEED AHMAD (IPS) of 1984 Batch. UP Police is the largest police force in the world working under a single command. It was formed in 1863 as the Office of the Inspector General of Police, Uttar Pradesh under the Police Act of 1861.
  • Former defence secretary Radha Krishna Mathur has been cleared for the post of as the eighth Chief Information Commissioner (CIC). He will be serving for nearly three years, making him the second-longest serving CIC. The high-level selection panel headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday and approved by President Pranab Mukherjee.
  • Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk today announced Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar as brand ambassador for the disease awareness campaign ‘Changing Diabetes’ initiated by it in India. In India 69.2 million people have diabetes and by 2035, it is estimated that 123.5 million people will have diabetes.
  • The government on 10th January re-appointed Urjit Patel as the deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India for a three-year term, ensuring continuity for the team spearheading the country’s monetary policy under RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan. Patel is the fourth deputy governor, the other three being HR Khan, R Gandhi and SS Mundra.
  • Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairman Tsai Ing-wen made history on 17th January. She has been sworn in as first president of Taiwan and calling for “positive dialogue” with Beijing. Chen Chien-jen was sworn in as vice-president.

  • Cancer expert Harpal Singh Kumar, whose parents fled to India from Pakistan during partition and later moved to Britain, He is received a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II for his “influential” work in the annual New Year’s Honours list that includes several other Indian-origin individuals on 31st December 2015.
  • In the 14th edition of the travel site’s Travelers’ Choice Awards, the Umaid Bhawan Palace was named the best hotel of 2016, with a five out of five bubble rating among its 840 guests.
  • Three Indian-Origin, Chennupati Jagadish, an eminent professor at Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, Jay Chandra, an eye doctor in New South Wales, and Sajeev Koshy, a dentist in Melbourne, received Order of Australia medal for the year 2016 announced on the Australia Day.

  • Sikkim has become India’s first fully organic state by implementing organic practices on around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land. It was 12 years ago in 2003 when the Pawan Chamling-led government decided to make Sikkim an organic farming state through a declaration in the legislative assembly.
  • Bihar government announced 35% reservation for woman in all government jobs in the state all level. The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet presided over by chief minister Nitish Kumar.
  • India’s largest tricolour was hoisted atop the tallest pole at Pahari Mandir in Ranchi, by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. This flag will remain hoisted for 24 hours and shall be illuminated with the help of twenty sodium vapour lights at night.
  • India has donated 40 ambulances and 8 buses to various hospitals, non-profit charitable organisations and educational institutions in Nepal at a function at the Indian embassy in Kathmandu on 67th Republic day of India.

On November 27, the driver of a cash transit van allegedly fled with Rs 22.50 crore, following which the entire southeast district of Delhi Police was put into action.   • Britain Actor Alan Rickman, one of the best loved and most warmly admired British actors of the past 30 years, has died in London aged 69 due to cancer. Rickman found a fresh legion of fans with his role as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films.
  • Former Deputy speaker of Gujarat Assembly and social worker Nirmala Gajvani passed away at the age of 87 on 21st January. She was the first woman deputy speaker of Gujarat Assembly. she married Dr. Hassanand Gajwani at 16 and, due to the partition of India and Pakistan, was forced to flee as a refugee with her 10-month old infant son in 1947.
