  • US President Barack Obama has nominated yet another Indian American, Nisha Desai Biswal, a long-time Congressional staffer, to a senior level position in his administration.
  • Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams has been selected to be on the crew for one of the four new International Space Station teams.NASA and its international partners, the Russia Federal Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, have assigned these crews.
  • Renowned academician Gita Gopinath of Indian origin was recently appointed professor of economics at prestigious Harvard University. She became the first woman professor of Indian-origin in the history of the institution. Since 2005, Gopinath had been a member of the Harvard faculty and was made the associate professor in 2009.
  • S Y Quraishi took charge as the Chief Election Commissioner of India on 30 July 2010. He was prior to this the Election Commissioner and his appointment to the position of the CEC was notified on 27 July 2010 after the President approved the appointment. He became India’s first Muslim CEC and would remain in office till June 2012.
