  • Three more judges have been appointed to the apex court. With these new appointments, the total tally of the judges in the Supreme Court has reached to 28. Justice Arun Mishra, Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and senior advocate Rohinton Nariman took the oath (as jydeges), administered by Chief Justice R.M. Lodha. Still, the apex court is short of three judges as its permitted strength is 31.
  • Amit Shah, close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been appointed as the new President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The announcement was made by the Home Minister and former BJP President Rajnath Singh after a meeting of the BJP parliamentary board.
  • Senior Congress leader? Margaret Alva is new governor of Goa. She was administered oath by Bombay High Court Chief Justice Mohit Shah. She was appointed after B.V. Wanchoo resigned last week. Many senior bureaucrats and politicians attended the oath-taking ceremony that took place at the Raj Bhavan on the outskirts of Panaji.
  • Om Prakash Kohli was sworn in as the new Governor of Gujarat on Wednesday. The ceremony was held in Gandhinagar and was administered by Gujarat High Court Chief Justice, Bhaskar Bhattacharya. Also present at the ceremony were Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Vajubhai Vala and other Ministers of the State Cabinet.
  • Former Union Minister and veteran BJP leader Ram Naik has sworn in as the new Governor of Uttar Pradesh. He was sworn in as the 27th Governor of the state by Allahabad High Court Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud?. The ceremony took place at the Raj Bhavan. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh was also present in the swearing-in ceremony along with some other ministers of the cabinet.   
  • Newly appointed Army Chief Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag will take over his office from today. His appointment by the erstwhile UPA government? had seen a political raw as the BJP and former army chief General VK Sinhg protested against his appointment . The vigilance ban that was imposed on him by former army chief General VK Singh in connection with an intelligence operation in Assam, was later removed in May 2012.

  • Reliance Power Ltd. is likely to buy the entire hydropower business of Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd. After the deal, Anil Ambani’s group will become the largest private hydropower provider in the country. Reliance CleanGen Ltd., a subsidiary of Reliance Power, which is a part of the Reliance Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Jaiprakash to purchase three power plants.
  • Tata Motors Ltd is planning to launch a passenger car to revive its share in the Indian market and cover up the losses it has incurred due to slow economy. The car is named Zest, which is a compact sedan and is built with user friendly features. According to industry data, the domestic car sales of the automobile company fell to 39 percent year on year and its market share dropped to 4.2 percent by the end of June.

  • The BRICS launched a development bank with a currency reserve pool worth $100 billion. The bank will be based in Shanghai and its operations will be controlled by India for the initial five years. Afterwards the operations will be presided over by Brazil followed by Russia. The bank has been named as New Development Bank.

  • The India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) at the Pragati Maidan has organized the first International Police Expo. In the two days’ expo, police technologies used in India and other countries will be shown. The exhibition will also showcase the welfare facilities and fitness of police force apart from displaying the most up-to-date and modern equipment and technologies used by police for the protection and security of society.
  • India has filed a diplomatic protest against the adjournment of the ongoing trial of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. According to a source, the Deputy High Commissioner of Pakistan has been summoned by the Foreign Ministry to complain against the delays. An Indian Deputy High commissioner has been sent to Islamabad to file a similar protest.

  • A special Air India flight carrying 183 people including 46 nurses freed by insurgents in Iraq and three crew members landed safely in India. The plane reached the Kochi airport, providing a sigh of relief to the Indian government and much worried parents.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to swap the reserves of old gold with new one. To optimise the management of the gold reserves, the Central Bank has informed the nominated banks to provide the quotes for swapping of gold. As per the proposal, RBI will exchange comparatively impure gold from its vault in Nagpur and will get the purer form of yellow metal.
  • The domestic arm of AirAsia, AirAsia India has launched daily flight service between Kochi and Bangalore, adding Kochi to its network. The airline has started its service from Bangalore to Chennai, Goa and Kochi. For the Bangalore-Kochi route, it has offered promotional seats for Rs. 500, inclusive of all fares.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee expressed grief over the death of seven people in the crash of an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Sitapur district Uttar Pradesh. The helicopter was flying from Bareilly to Allahabad when the incident took place. Mukherjee sent a condolence message to the chief of the air force, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha.

  • The Haryana Assembly passed the bill to set up a separate body for managing Sikh gurdwaras in the state. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala introduced the Haryana Sikh Gurdwaras (Management) Bill, 2014 on Friday. The bill was opposed by the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar warned the Sikhs living in Haryana to beware of the Congress’s plan to divide the community.
  • Satish Upadhyay who has recently appointed as Delhi BJP chief said that senior party leaders and members will be consulted on the decision of forming government in Delhi. Only subsequently, he can say anything on this issue. Since February, the capital is under President’s rule after the Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal resigned as Delhi chief minister.
  • Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to discuss the issue of establishing a separate board to look after Sikh gurdwaras in Haryana. He requested the Central government to intervene.

  • The two-time former chief minister of Assam Prafulla Kumar Mahanta resigned as a party president. He described the poor performance of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in the recent panchayat polls and the Lok Sabha election as the reason for his resignation. The regional party AGP had not won even a single seat in the Lok Sabha election.

  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced the launch of a Kisan (farmers') TV in 2014 in the Union Budget for 2014-15. It will give real time information to the farmers related to agriculture, water conservation, new farming techniques, new technologies and organic training.   • The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has been successfully test-fired from defence base, the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur in Balasore district in Odisha. The missile developed jointly by India and Russia has a range of 290 km with the ability to carry a conventional weapon of up to 300 kg. The missile’s maximum speed is three times faster than the US subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

  • Hockey India has announced its 16-member women’s hockey squad for the Commonwealth Games 2014. The team will perform under the captaincy of Midfielder Ritu Rani whereas defender Deepika has been selected as the vice-captain of the team. The selection trials took place at the National Institute of Sports (NIS),Patiala. The Games will take place in Glasgow from July 23 to Aug 3.
  • Women’s single badminton champion of Commonwealth games, Saina Nehwal has been pulled out of the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held in Glasgow, due to lack of fitness and her inability to recover from the blisters on her feet. Saina suffered from a groin injury during her victory series in the Australian Open
  • India has defeated England by 95 runs in the second test at Lord’s. India has won after 28 years at Lord’s where the third generation Indians brought a long awaited victory for the nation. Since 2011, this is the first overseas test win of the team. Ishant Sharma’s seven wickets, Ravindra Jadeja’s 68 runs in the second innings and three wickets, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 52 runs in the second innings and six wickets contributed to the victory of the team.
  • Shooter Gagan Narang brought cheers for India at Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 when he won the silver medal in the men's 50m Rifle Prone event. Narang was bronze medallist at the London Olympics.
  • Indian wrestlers put a stunning show in the Commonwealth Games on the day 6 by winning three of the five medals. Sushil Kumar, Amit Kumar and Vinesh Phogat bagged gold medals in the wrestling events held in the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC). Rajeev Tomar had to settle for a silver medal.

  • The 'UP e-pension system' is all set to be implemented as Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has given his nod to the e-governance initiative that will benefit lakhs of pensioners in the state. Under this system, filling up of pension forms, checking, verification and payment will be done online. The National Informatics Centre has provided assistance in developing the mechanism.
  • In an effort to create and spread awareness about HIV/AIDS, Uttar Pradesh government has launched a GPS-based iPhone and android phone application. The application will provide a detailed information on how the disease is contracted and spread. It will also provide details about facility centres for check ups.
  • Microsoft today declared on their official blog about the launch of Lumia 530. The retail price of the phone is estimated to be 85 euros (around Rs.6, 869) excluding taxes and subsidies and is likely to be rolled out in the market in August 2014. Lumia 530 will run on the latest version of Windows Phone 8.1 and has 15 GB free cloud storage on Microsoft OneDrive
  • Defence Minister Arun Jaitley announced that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is ready with a plan to establish an advanced technology centre. For setting up these technology centres, leading academic institutes have been selected like IITs.
