AirAsia's Tony Fernandes declared on Twitter about this development and the chairman’s appointment is due in a day or two.   • 8,000 laptops will be given to the students in Ghaziabad by UP Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav. The project cost is around Rs.3,750 crore.   • WhatsApp edged past its own record when 27 billion messages were sent through it within a span of 24 hours. The earlier record was for 19 billion messages on 31st December 2012. As many as 10 billion messages were sent and 17 billion received.
  • The last telegram will be sent on July 15 thus ending the telegraph service which spanned for 160 years. It started in 1850 when telegram was sent between Calcutta and Diamond Harbour. 6,400km of telegraph lines connected Calcutta, Peshawar, Mumbai, Chennai, Ooty and Bangalore by November 1853.
  • TRAI slashed the national roaming calls and SMS tariff cap that would begin from July 1. TRAI stated that, at present, free national roaming will not be in vogue but the service providers can allocate national mobile roaming at a fixed amount to the subscribers from July 1.
  • A surveillance program has been launched in the country which will enable the security agencies and income tax department the right to pry mails, tap phone conversations and monitor social media posts across networks.

  • Ruma Chatterjee who had been the face of India in the international arena and was the coach of the national cycling team and she belonged to Kolkata and was there in Delhi for the national camp organized before the team left for Switzerland. She died during a training session when she was hit by a speeding vehicle. Ruma, 51, is survived by her 77-year-old mother and five sisters.
  • With India winning all the three group matches against South Africa, Pakistan and West Indies in the Champions Trophy, it holds the number one position in the ICC ODI rankings by securing eight points. India was already on top and now their points stand at 121 points. England is at the 2nd position, with a berth in the semis, and has 113 points.
  • India won the Champions Trophy by defeating England by five runs in a rain-marred but exciting match which was reduced to twenty overs of play at Edgbaston. India made 129 for 7 to which England responded by making 124 for eight in 20 overs.

  • Nexus 7 Tablet will be released by Google in July at a price range of $229. The price has been kept higher so that it competes in the segment of Apple iPad Mini and Kindle Fire rather than low-end tabs.
