  • The Supreme Court appointed former judge Justice H S Bedi as the chairman of the monitoring authority looking into the case of 22 alleged fake encounter killings in Gujarat between 2002 and 2006.
  • The Centre on Saturday announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Bikram Singh as the next army chief from May 31, to succeed General V K Singh. Lieutenant General Singh, the eastern army commander, will head the 13-lakh strong force and have tenure of just over two years, till August 2014.
  • Sonia Gandhi, president of the Indian National Congress approved the name of Vijay Bahuguna as the new chief minister of Uttrakhand. The decision comes after a week-long stand off. The decision has come as a rude shock to the supporters of Harish Rawat who led the party campaign during the state assembly.
  • The Maharashtra government has appointed special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam to represent it during the trial of 13/7 Mumbai triple blasts that claimed 27 lives and left several others wounded.

  • An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale hit Mexico post midnight IST. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre of the quake was Guerrero region, located 186 kilometres from Acapulco city.

  • Sixteen Afghans were killed by a 'rogue' United States soldier who walked off his base and opened fire on them in their homes in the early hours. The dead include nine children and three women, plus five wounded.
  • A Turkish military helicopter on a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission crashed into a house outside the Afghan capital Kabul on Friday, killing at least 15 people -- 12 soldiers on board and three civilians on the ground.
  • A suspected militant was killed and 20 people were injured when an explosive-laden car blew up in Bijbehara town in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, police said.
  • At least five passengers of a bus were killed and 33 others wounded, including nine critically, in a road accident in hilly Ramban district of Jammu region on Saturday morning.

  • Manohar Parrikar, who spearheaded Bharatiya Janata Party's emphatic win in assembly polls with majority of its own for the first time, today took oath as chief minister of Goa at the head of a 6-member coalition government.
  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is set to expand his ministry. Samajwadi Party veteran Azam Khan, who took the oath of office as cabinet minister along with Akhilesh on March 15, will be sworn in again as he had failed to complete his oath.
  • Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, who is seeking a third term to the Upper House filed his nomination papers from Gujarat along with two other candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • The Supreme Court refused to entertain a petition seeking a direction to the Nanavati Commission, which is inquiring into the 2002 Gujarat riot cases, to summon Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his alleged role in the carnage.
  • The Vijay Bahuguna government won a trust vote in the Uttarakhand Assembly amid a walkout by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party members. Thirty-nine members voted in favour of the trust motion tabled by Bahuguna, Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal informed the House.
