  • Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on 03 March 2017 issued a decision appointing First Vice-President Bakri Hassan Saleh as Prime Minister. Bakri Hassan Saleh would hold both posts of First Vice-President and Prime Minister.
  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) appointed Sachin Tendulkar as the Ambassador for the ICC Women's World Cup 2017. Women's World Cup will be played in England from June 24 to July 23 2017.
  • Senior diplomat Manjeev Singh Puri has been appointed as India’s new envoy to Nepal.
  • Former Polish prime minister Donald Tusk was chosen to head the European Council for a second term during a summit. Donald Tusk was supported by 27 of the 28 members of the European Union.
  • Bharatiya Janata Party leader Manohar Parrikar was on 14 March 2017 sworn in as the new chief minister of Goa. He was administered the oath of office by Governor Mridula Sinha.
  • Footballer-turned-politician N Biren Singh was sworn in as the first BJP chief minister of Manipur on 15 March 2017 and the party's third CM after the ones in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in the Northeast. Singh was given oath of office by governor Najma Heptulla at Raj Bhavan.
  • Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu lawmaker in the US Congress, elected as the co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, has vowed to work for furthering Indo-US relations.
  • Justice Navanithi Prasad Singh was on 20 March 2017 sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Kerala High Court. Governor Justice (retd) P Sathasivam administered oath of office to Justice Singh at a function held at the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram.
  • An Indian-American legal luminary has been nominated by US President Donald Trump to a key judicial position on the powerful US court of appeals. Amul Thapar, 47, who in 2007 became the first South Asian Article III judge when he was appointed as a US District Judge for the Eastern District of Kentucky
  • Indian-American Vanita Gupta, who headed civil rights division in the Department of Justice in the Obama Administration, has been appointed as president and CEO of ‘The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights’, becoming the first woman to head the prestigious organisation.

  • India Test captain Virat Kohli will be awarded with the Polly Umrigar Award at the BCCI award ceremony in Bangalore on March 8, 2017. Kohli becomes the first Indian cricketer to get it on the third occasion. All-rounder R Ashwin will also become the first Indian to receive the Dilip Sardesai award twice.
  • The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation announced Thursday that former President Barack Obama will receive this year's John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. The award got its name from the title of Kennedy's book "Profiles in Courage," which earned a Pulitzer Prize.
  • Eminent Konkani writer Mahabaleshwar Sail has been honoured with the Saraswati Samman 2016. He will be awarded for his novel 'Hawthan'.
  • Indian-origin British director Gurinder Chadha has been honoured with the Sikh Jewel Award for 2017 for her immense contribution to British cinema.
  • Veteran actor Anupam Kher will be honoured with the Kala Ratan Award by Vice President Hamid Ansari. Anupam Kher was honoured him the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts.
  • The Jain Shwetambar Terapanthi Mahasbha on Tuesday gave its prestigious 'Anuvrat Award' to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar for initiating and implementing prohibition in the state. The award was conferred on the CM by Acharya Shri Mahashraman Ji at a function in the S K Memorial Hall.

  • Derek Walcott, a Nobel-prize winning poet known for capturing the essence of his native Caribbean who became the region’s most internationally famous writer, has died on the island of St Lucia. He was 87.
  • Govind Talwalkar, veteran editor and author of 25 books, passed away in the United States on Tuesday aged 91 following a series of health issues that failed to dampen his passion for journalism to the end.
  • Prominent Tamil writer and Sahitya Akademi winner Ashokamitran, who powerfully portrayed the lives and struggles of the urban middle class life in his literary works, died, aged 86. He collapsed at home.
