  • Aditya Birla Group consolidated all its apparel business into a single entity named Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, worth Rs 5,290 crore, to become the biggest fashion lifestyle company of India. Madura Garments Lifestyle Retail Company Ltd’s and Aditya Birla Nuvo’s apparel businesses will be demerged into Pantaloons Fashion & Retail Ltd.
  • AIADMK supremo and re-elected legislative leader of the party J Jayalalithaa has been sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu by Governor K Rosaiah. This is the fifth time she was sworn in as CM. Reports say that she will hold other important portfolios such as home, district revenue officers?, general administration, public, police, and all India services.

  • Ajinkya Rahane, middle order batsman of India, has been awarded CEAT Indian Cricketer of the Year and Rohit Sharma has been conferred with a special award for making 264 record breaking score against Sri Lanka in a one-day match played in Kolkata. Rohit Sharma is the only cricketer to achieve such a score in the 50-overs limited one day game. CEAT Cricket Ratings for 2014-15 is awarded to cricketers on the basis of their overall performances in the concerned year in all formats of international cricket including Test matches, ODI, and T-20 match format. 
  • A virtual Memorial Wall has been launched by India to honour soldiers who sacrificed their lives during UN peacekeeping operations. Asoke Mukerji, India's Ambassador to the United Nations, unveiled the virtual wall yesterday at a ceremony to mark International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

  • As per a report by telecom regulator TRAI total gross revenue of telecom service providers got increased by 9.54 per cent to Rs 63,955 crore in October-December, 2014. In the same period but in 2013 the combined gross revenue of operators was at Rs 58,385 crore. In Oct-Dec quarter the number of telephone subscribers in India increased by 6.09 per cent to 970.97 million and there is an increase of 6.51 per cent to 943.97 million in the mobile or wireless subscriber base.
  • Google India has launched two Chromebooks in India after partnering with Xolo and Nexian at Rs. 12,999. The Necian Air Chromebook is already available on Amazon India while the Xolo Chromebook will be sold on Snapdeal after few days.
  • Union minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari, has said in an interview that his government is going to award around Rs. 3,00,000 crore projects in the coming six months through three models - Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), hybrid, and PPP.
  • Reliance Industries Ltd. has become the first Indian issuer to raise $200 million in Asia’s most happening bond market, Taiwan, by selling Formosa bonds. RIL said in a statement that Taiwanese life insurance companies have mainly bought the US dollar denominated notes that provide 5 per cent fixed rate of interest to the investors and the payment is done half yearly. This debt instrument has been proposed to be listed at Taipei Exchange. 
  • Report published by IT advisory firm Gartner shows that in terms of revenue earning in 2014, Microsoft is still the No. 1 software company in India. The software behemoth still accounts for 25 per cent of the total sales in the year 2014. The top three companies that command half of the total software sales in India are Microsoft, Oracle and IBM. IT advisory firm Gartner said that software revenue of India increased by 8.3 per cent in 2014 in comparison to 2013, an increase from $3.7 billion to $4 billion.

  • Microsoft has collaborated with Vadodara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) to open India’s first Digital Experience Centre in Vadodara. Microsoft India’s Business Development Director, Manohar Hotchandani, announced that the concerned centre (to be managed by Ingram Micro, distributor of Microsoft) will help business entities, individuals, partners, and institutions get first-hand experience of Microsoft software run modern devices Office 365.

  • With the ongoing slide in the Indian browses, total market capitalization of the Indian companies has not dropped significantly, thereby adversely affecting Global M-cap ranking of India with respect to last year. In the concerned list, India slipped from 2014’s ninth position to 10th position, sliding even below market cap of Switzerland (9th rank) listed companies.

  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT), on the request of the counsel for Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has extended the ban on orders related to old vehicles in the capital till 18 May. The order is applicable to over 15-year-old petrol vehicles and over 10-year-old diesel vehicles. The previous date was to expire on this Saturday and all such vehicles would have been banned in New Delhi.
  • India seeks UN intervention and pleas to raise the matter with Pakistan in the release of LeT commander Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi. India's permanent representative to the UN Asoke Mukherjee in a letter to the current chair of the UN Sanctions Committee Jim McLay wrote that Lakhvi's release is a violation of the 1267 UN resolution that deals with designated entities and individuals associated with terror groups. Lakhvi, a Mumbai terror attack mastermind was set free by Pakistani court on April 9.
  • Hyderabad’s Metropolitan Sessions Court has granted bail on certain conditions to all the ten accused involved in multi-crore accounting Satyam Computer Services Ltd (SCSL) fraud case. This includes B Ramalinga Raju and his brother B Rama Raju. While both B Ramalinga Raju and B Rama Raju will have to pay personal bond of Rs. one lakh each, personal bonds for the other eight accused will be Rs. 50,000. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-day China visit is turning out to be a success if the number and worth of bilateral agreements signed between the two countries are taken into consideration. This morning 24 agreements have been signed between India and China that are worth more than 10 Billion Dollars.
  • Leading telecom firm Airtel has begun the trial of its 4G service in Mumbai. As per media reports, the company has partnered with Flipkart to sell the service. The 4G service is being offered along with devices of leading brands such as Lenovo, Asus, Xiaomi and Huawei.

  • Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been convicted by a sessions court in Mumbai for killing a homeless man and injuring four others, sleeping on a pavement in Bandra outside a bakery, on 28 September 2002, while driving his Toyota Land Cruiser SUV under the influence of alcohol.
  • Sahara chief Subrata Roy may get bail next week as he had managed to raise Rs 10,000 crore in deposit, Rs 5,000 crore in cash and a bank guarantee with Sebi on the orders of the Supreme Court. As per media reports, the Court had laid down the monetary condition for bail on 26 March last year.

  • Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley tabled the Finance Bill 2015 in the lower house of the parliament. It was latter passed with a voice vote. This bill is important for the Narendra Modi government because it consists of tax recommendations of the government for the 2015-16 fiscal. 
  • Indian parliament passed a landmark Constitution (119th Amendment) Bill that will operationalise 1974 India-Bangladesh Land Boundary agreement. As per the agreement, lands will be exchanged between the two neighbours, putting an end to a long awaited standoff on territorial issues. 
  • Karnataka High Court acquitted AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa in disproportionate assets case. She can now return to politics and also become Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu again. This acquittal is crucial for AIADMK because this will help ‘Amma’ in leading her party in the upcoming 2016 assembly election.
  • Upper House of the Parliament the crucial Black Money Bill that mandates strict action (including up to a maximum of 10 years imprisonment) against individuals or companies who either indulge in tax evasion or conceal income and assets from tax department. After its approval by Rajya Sabha, it has now been sent for assent to President Pranab Mukherjee. The bill was first tabled in the Lok Sabha on 11 May by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and was approved the same day.

  • Indian Army is all set to induct almost entirely the indigenous AWS or Akash Weapon System, after a long wait of 32 years. This missile system creates a proven shield up to a maximum of 25 kms and 20 kms altitude from possible aerial missile threats released from unmanned aerial vehicles, drones, helicopters, and fighter planes. Defence Research Development Laboratory developed this surface-to-air short ranged defence system and is capable of launching missile from the information obtained from radar system.

  • The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued summons to superstar and IPL’s Kolkata Knight Riders team owner Shah Rukh Khan on his alleged involvement in irregularities related to Indian Premier League (IPL). The 49-year old superstar has been asked by ED to appear before it by May-end. It is alleged that Shah Rukh Khan violated many money transaction rules including that of Forex. 
  • Giving a major push to the proposed bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan, Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that for promoting friendship between the two neighbours, he is in favour of the series being played in UAE in December 2015. 
  • BCCI has announced squads for one test match and three one-dayers to be played in Bangladesh from 10 June to 14 June and 18 June to 24 June respectively. The ODI team will be led by skipper MS Dhoni, the Test squad will be led by Virat Kohli.
  • India’s test cricket captain Virat Kohli has been named by SportsPro, a renowned British sports business magazine, among the top 10 most marketable sportspersons in the world. His rank is 6th in the list. This places 26-year old Virat in the same league as other world-renowned athletes including sprinter Usain Bolt and football sensations Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Neymar. Another Indian who made it to the top 50 most marketable person list is Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal. She secured 44th rank.
  • Indian boxers had a gala day as Indian men boxers at Doha International Tournament bagged 7 medals (4 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals) and junior women boxers bagged 5 medals (3 golds and 2 silvers) on the final day of AIBA Women's Junior World Championships. Gold medals at Doha International Tournament were won by Manoj Kumar, Manish Kaushik, Shiva Thapa, and Devendro Singh in the 64kg, 60kg, 56kg, and 49kg men’s boxing categories respectively. 
  • Abhinav Bindra, ace shooter and India’s only Olympic gold medallist in individual capacity, became the fourth shooter to secure quota slot in the upcoming Rio 2016 summer Olympic Games. The feat was already accomplished by Apurvi Chandela, Gagan Narang (by winning bronze medal in Fort Benning World Cup’s men's 50m prone event), and Jitu Rai (by winning silver in the 50m Free Pistol event during World Championships in Spain’s Granada) in earlier World Cups. 
  • Indian players crashed out of ITTF World Tour Philippines Open Table Tennis championship in the men's individual categories in the second round. India’s campaign in the championship ended after both ace Indian players Harmeet Desai and Soumyajit Ghosh lost in the second round matches. Soumyajit Ghosh gave a good fight to Japan’s Koriyama Hokuto but lost the 2nd round match by 7-11, 2-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 12-14. In the pre-quarterfinal match, Harmeet Desai went down to Chinese Taipei’s Wn Chih Chi by 6-11, 11-8, 6-11, 4-11, 10-12. I

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi after launching DD Kisan, a 24x7 channel on agriculture, vouched for increasing farm productivity through intensive use of technologies along with scientific advancements. Modi also called for making the agricultural sector vibrant as well as dynamic once again as this sector currently remains neglected.
