  • Gopal Krishna Pillai IAS (Retd.) has been appointed as a Chairman and Thomas Mathew T., as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors by MCX Stock Exchange (MCX-SX). Election of the Chairman has been approved by SEBI. Renewal to the exchange has also been granted by SEBI last month.
  • SBI Mutual Fund said it has appointed Dinesh Kumar Khara as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. He takes over from Deepak Chatterjee who is now an advisor to the fund house.

  • Veteran actress Waheeda Rehman will be honoured with the introductory Centenary Award for the Indian Film Personality of the Year. It is the special honour to remember the 100 years of Indian cinema. The award has been set by the information and broadcasting ministry. Actress will receive the award at the 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) that is going to start in Goa on 20th November.
  • “Flying Sikh” Milkha Singh said that he is very happy that a sportsperson in India is going to receive the first ever India’s highest civilian award – Bharat Ratna. But he would have been happier if instead of Sachin Tendulkar hockey legend Dhyan Chand was chosen to receive the award.

  • Aircel, a mobile network operator is presently carrying out trials of Long-Term Evolution (4G) services in Andhra Pradesh before introducing it commercially. This has been said by the top official, Deepinder Tiwana, AP circle business head of Aircel.
  • State-run telecom firm MTNL has signed agreement with US-based Los Alamos Technical Associates (LATA) for launching training programmes on cyber and physical security. 'MTNL is going to start these trainings through its training centres at New Delhi and Mumbai.
  • The country's first women's bank, Bharatiya Mahila Bank, will be inaugurated in Mumbai on November 19 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. On the same day, the bank's branches in Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Guwahati will begin operations. The Chennai branch is located on Anna Salai.
  • Ratan Tata has admitted that positioning Nano as the cheapest car was a mistake committed by the company as it has not helped the matters as far as marketing of the car is concerned.
  • Bathinda has become the hotspot for the fourth edition of World Cup Kabaddi. In the two weeks’ time, 12 teams in men’s category and 8 in women’s category will play for the top position. Last year, India was the winner in both these categories. Total price money for the entire tournament is Rs 7 crore. Out of the total, Rs 2 crore will be given to the winner in men’s section and Rs 1 crore to the winners in women’s section.

  • Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, the dentist couple were convicted of the murder of Aarushi, their daughter as well as the domestic help Hemraj. This case has been in the limelight since five years. The Special CBI judge Shyam Lal gave the verdict at 3.25 p.m. and stated that the punishment will be specified on Tuesday.

  • Virat Kohli became the number one batsman in One-day cricket. He scored 344 runs in the series. Kohli scored 61 runs in Pune, 100 not out in Jaipur, 68 runs in Mohali, 115 not out in Nagpur and 0 in Bengaluru. This score gave him 38 rating points because of which he is now three places up in the ICC ranking table for ODI batsmen. It is for the first time in his career that he has reached at the number-one spot.
  • Heena Sidhu, the dentist from Patiala overpowered the top shooters and grabbed the top honors in the World Cup finals in Munich. The shooters whom she edged past included Olena Kostevych from Ukraine who had got bronze medal in London Olympic. She was third in the qualifying round but soared to a record score in the final that of 203.8 points and thus grabbed the gold comfortably.
  • After successfully completed 24 years of his career, Sachin Tendulkar received an emotional farewell. In this Test series India defeated West Indies by an innings and 126 runs. In his concluding speech at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai Sachin thanked everyone for contributing in his career and said that it is hard to believe that his life on cricket field is coming to an end
  • Members of the IPL Governing Council discussed whether an alternative country should host the 7th edition of the IPL next year. The general elections will be held next year and that puts a question mark on hosting the tournament during that time as dates may clash and would lead to security issues.
  • Norwegian Magnus Carlsen is the new champion of chess. He defeated the five-time title-holder Viswanathan Anand at the World Chess Championship in Chennai. Carlsen’s win came after a draw in the 10th game of the World Chess Championship match. Anand had won the world championship title five times i.e. in 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012
  • YES BANK has inked a multi-year contract with the Hockey India League (HIL) which will start from 2014 season. Narinder Batra, HIL chairman stated this would be long term collaboration for the League.
  • India won the ODI series against West Indies 2-1 with an easy five-wicket victory in the 3rd ODI. The win was etched by Shikhar Dhawan’s smashing century. West Indies made 263 for five and India reached the target with 23 balls still remaining. Dhawan made 119 in 95 balls.
  • Shikhar Dhawan became the first player to strike 5 tons in the ODIs. He also was the only player to smash 20 fours in the ODIs in this year. India will tour South Africa in December.

  • Now ISRO has also decided to promote awareness about its plans and programs using social media. It has launched its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) Facebook page on October 22 and has got 12,072 likes and 10,939 persons talking about the page. In fact on this page only NASA wished ISRO luck with ‘lucky peanuts’.
  • India launched the Mars mission in a copybook style at 2:38 pm. The 400 million long journey to Mars is for the search of methane and minerals. The Rs 450 crore project undertaken by India is 4th in the world and the first one by an Asian country. Earlier the US, Russia and the European Space Agency (ESA) have taken up the mission.
  • India test fired Agni-I missile successfully from its military base in Odisha. This is nuclear-capable surface-to-surface missile which has been developed. The Agni-I can strike at a range of 700 km. The testing was done by the Strategic Force Command of the army from a base on Wheeler Island located in Dhamra, Bhadrak district, 170 km from Bhubaneshwar.
  • Internet has reached to only 16% of the Indian population but if we look at the actual figures then the number of internet users in India has edged past the 200 million mark. This is so to say 10 times the people in Australia. This is as per the report by IMRB and Internet and Mobile Association of India (IMAI) and IMRB.
