  • Neelamani N Raju, a 1983 batch IPS officer became the first female Director General and Inspector General of Police of Karnataka. She will replace Rupak Kumar Dutta.
  • Seasoned diplomat Ajay Bisaria, currently the Indian ambassador to Poland, has been appointed the India's high commissioner to Pakistan.
  • Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has been designated as the new Finance Secretary. Adhia is a 1981 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre. The vacancy was caused following the superannuation of Ashok Lavasa last month.
  • UNESCO member states appointed former French Culture Minister Audrey Azoulay as the new Director-General of UNESCO. She will the 11th Director-General of UNESCO and the second woman to occupy the position.
  • RBI Governor Urjit Patel has been appointed to the Financial Stability Institute Advisory Board (FSAB) or Bank of International Settlement (BIS).
  • Acclaimed South African Indian-origin AIDS researcher Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim has been appointed as a UNAIDS Special Ambassador for Adolescents and HIV.
  • Former national rugby captain Aga Hussain has been elected the president of Asia Rugby. He has thus become the first Indian to occupy the post.
  • Former Expenditure and Revenue Secretary NK Singh appointed as chairperson of the Fifteenth Finance Commission. His tenure will be until October 30, 2019.

  • India's star gymnast Dipa Karmakar has been conferred a D.Litt. degree from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Agartala.
  • Indonesia's Kevin Lilliana has won the Miss International 2017 title in Tokyo.
  • India's Manushi Chhillar has been crowned as Miss World 2017 at a grand event held in Sanya in China. The title was last won by Priyanka Chopra for India in 2000. Yukta Mookhey won the title in 1999. In 1997, Diana Hayden had bagged the title, while Aishwarya Rai had the honours in 1994. Reita Faria was the first Indian to win the crown in the 1966.
  • Bengali writer Nabaneeta Dev Sen has been awarded with the big little book award 2017 for her contribution to the children literature in Bengali Language.
  • Actor Rajkummar Rao was named the Best Actor at the 11th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA). Mayank Tewari and Amit V Masurkar won the award for Best Screenplay.
  • South Africa's Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has been crowned Miss Universe 2017, becoming the second woman from South Africa to win the title. Laura González from Colombia was named the first runner-up while Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett stood third at the pageant which was held in Las Vegas, USA.

  • Freedom fighter Jyoti Prasad who actively took part in the Quit India Movement in 1942 and went to jail, died. He was 95.
  • Former Prime Minister of Nepal Kirti Nidhi Bista passed away. He was 90.
  • Veteran Hindi poet and Jnanpith award winner, Kunwar Narain died. He was 90.
  • TV director and actor Peter Baldwin died. He was 86.
  • Senior Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former Kerala Minister E. Chandrasekharan Nair passed away. He was 88.

  • India's star doubles pair A Sharath Kamal and G Sathiyan won the bronze medal in the Seamaster 2017 World Tour Swedish Open table tennis tournament.
  • Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by 185 runs to clinch its maiden Under-19 Asia Cup title.
  • Indian women's team fast bowler Jhulan Goswami became the highest wicket-taker in the history of women's international cricket. Goswami is also the only Indian to take ten wickets in a Test in women's cricket.
