  • An Indian-American Sikh lawyer Gurbir Grewal has been nominated as a county prosecutor in New Jersey. Gurbir Grewal was formally nominated by Governor Chris Christie to be the next Bergen county prosecutor

  • The Sports Ministry is all set to appoint Australian Terry Walsh as head coach of the Indian men’s hockey team. SAI Director General Jiji Thomson has said that Walsh’s name has been forwarded to the Sports Ministry and it will take a week’s time for clearing his appointment. A monthly salary of Australian dollar 12,000 has also been recommended by SAI.

  • India has been leading the global chart of remittances as staggering $71 billion in remittances in 2013, which is almost three times the FDI done in 2012 as per the World Bank forecast. The countries which top the chart are India with $71 billion, China with $60 billion, the Philippines with $26 billion, Mexico with $22 billion, Nigeria getting $21 billion, and Egypt receiving $20 billion. Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ukraine and Vietnam are the other major recipients.
  • India will begin supply of electricity to Bangladesh from October 5. The two countries have now a new transmission line through which the supply between the countries will begin. This would be the first time high voltage direct current transmission between two countries will begin.
  • Indian Oil Corp (IOC) emerged as the only bidder for the stakes in Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd or the HPL where the offer is of less than Rs 3,000 crore. RIL perceived as the most powerful bidder did not bid by the deadline at noon, and as per sources RIL had objection regarding the West Bengal government’s process of receiving the bids in a sealed envelope in place of an open auction
  • Five agreements will be signed between India and Russia for strategic collaboration pertaining to global as well as bilateral matters. This was decided in the annual summit level talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Vladimir Putin at Moscow.
  • The 1st unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) has started generating power and has supplied though only 20% of its capacity to the southern power grid as per a report by Power System Operation Corporation Ltd. On October 25, the 1,000 MW unit synced again with the grid. It generated 200 MW power on October 28, though on October 27 it had generated only 188 MW.
  • BBM has got 80 million active monthly users. The app was unveiled on iOS and Android on October 21 and had been downloaded by 20 million users after that. The app facilitates message exchange as well as notifies users when the message is delivered and read

The 200th test may be held in Mumbai against the West Indies, next month. This announcement has ended all the speculations which were there regarding his retirement. Tendulkar had retired from ODIs in December 2012.
  • Sachin Tendulkar had expressed his desire to play his last match in front of his home crowd, while there is a tussle going on among the local cricket associations to get the hosting rights of the farewell match. Tendulkar is supposed to play his 199th match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata while his 200th match will be played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai from November 14-18 before he signs off from all formats of the game.
  • 15 yr old Jehan Daruvala won at the British Karting Championship and is now in the league of F1 champions like Jenson Button and Nigel Mansell, the champions earlier. Jehan’s coach and mentor Terry Fullerton said Jehan faced tough driving conditions and also stiff competition from the experienced team mate Ticktum.
  • Indian boxers created history in the World Boxing Championship being held at Almaty (Kazakhstan) when as many as five boxers got into the quarterfinals for the very first time. If they win one more match they will get the bronze. In 2011 four boxers had reached the quarterfinals in Azerbaijan. This time Satish Kumar (+91kg), Sumit Sangwan (81kg), Manoj Kumar (64kg), Vikash Malik (60kg) and Shiva Thapa (56kg) are in the final list of eight.
  • Next year’s World Twenty20 Championship inaugural match will be played between the Indian cricket team and Pakistan team. Twenty20 Championship is scheduled in Bangladesh from 16th March to 6th April. In this 22 day tournament, 60 tournament matches will be played, consisting of 35 men's and 25 women's matches, at Chittagong, Dhaka and Sylhet.
  • Saurav Ghosal created history as he is the first Indian to who has got entry into the quarter-finals of the AJ Bell PSA World Squash Championship. This is the most acclaimed competition in the game. Ranked 17 in the world, Ghosal was down in two games but then etched a historic win over Finland’s Henrik Mustonen who is ranked 40th.
