  • Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres on 5 October 2016 was unanimously selected by the UN Security Council as the next UN Secretary-General. Guterres will succeed Ban Ki-moon on 1 January 2017.
  • Abdelilah Bekirane, leader of Morocco 's Islamic Justice and Development Party (PJD), was appointed as country 's Prime Minister on 10 October 2016. This will be his second term as Prime Minister of Morocco.
  • Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal was appointed as a member of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Athletes' Commission. Saina received a letter to the effect from the IOC President Thomas Bach on 17 October 2016.
  • Japan's Morinari Watanabe on 20 October 2016 was elected the new President of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). Watanabe emerged victorious in the election after defeating rival candidate Georges Guelzec of France by a huge margin in a vote at the governing body's Congress.
  • Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra on 24 October 2016 appointed former Chief Justice of Orissa High Court Bilal Nazki as the chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission.
  • Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, was on 27 October 2016 appointed as Chairman of GSMA. As GSMA Chairman, Mittal will oversee the strategic direction of the organisation.

  • The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet on 3 October 2016 decided to award the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Yoshinori Ohsumi. Ohsumi is bestowed with the prize for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy. He discovered and elucidated mechanisms underlying autophagy, a fundamental process for degrading and recycling cellular components.
  • Nayanjot Lahiri, Professor of History at the Ashoka University, was on 4 October 2016 awarded with the 2016 John F. Richards Prize for her book Ashoka in Ancient India. The prize will be awarded to her at the Association’s 131st Annual Meeting in January, 2017.
  • The 2016 Nobel Peace Prize was on 7 October 2016 awarded toColombian President Juan Manuel Santos for his resolute efforts to bring the country 's more than 50-year-long civil war to an end, a war that took away the lives of at least 220000 Colombians and displaced nearly six million people.
  • Kirtiraj Kundlik Gaikwad, an Indian scientist, was on 12 October 2016 awarded with the prestigious IAFP Young scientist scholarship award 2016 for his research work on development of novel oxygen absorbing package in the field of active packaging for oxygen sensitive food products.
  • Bob Dylan on 13 October 2016 won the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. Dylan was bestowed with the precious award for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.
  • Comedian Bill Murray on 23 October 2016 was honoured with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour. He was presented with the award at the ceremony organised at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in Washington DC.
  • Paul Beatty on 25 October 2016 became the first US author to win the Man Booker Prize. He won the award for his racial satire, 'The Sellout' at a ceremony in London's Guildhall.

  • India on 21 October 2016 signed a 650-million US dollar loan agreement with the World Bank for the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor-III (EDFC-III) Project. The project will benefit industries of Northern and Eastern India, which rely on railway network for transportation of material inputs and exports.

  • Jharkhand on 1 October 2016 became first state of India to implement Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in Kerosene. The scheme is being implemented in four identified districts of the State namely Chatra, Hazaribagh, Khunti and Jamtara.
  • Maharashtra Government on 19 October 2016 launched Kaushalya SETU (Self-Employment and Talent Utilisation) initiative. The initiative, which is a skill development programme for students, is likely to generate employment for as many as 7.5 lakh people in state.
  • Himachal Pradesh was declared India’s second Open Defecation Free (ODF) State. The first state to achieve the feat was Sikkim. Himachal Pradesh successfully achieved total rural sanitation coverage of 100 per cent in the state, with all 12 districts in the state being both, declared as well as verified as ODF.

  • Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman on 31 October 2016 released State-wise Ease of Doing Business rankings in New Delhi. Andhra Pradesh and Telengana topped the all-India ranking with 98.78 percent each, followed by Gujarat with 98.21 per cent, Chhattisgarh with 97.32 per cent and Madhya Pradesh with 97.01 percent. Gujarat has slipped to third position from the first rank of 2015.

  • Indian shooter Jitu Rai on 6 October 2016 clinched a silver medal in the 50 meter pistol event of the ISSF World Cup Final at Bologna, Italy. Jitu, 29, shot a score of 188.8 to finish behind China 's Wei Pang at 190.6. Italy 's Giuseppe Giordano settled for the bronze.
  • Andy Murray on 9 October 2016 won the 2016 China Open Men 's Singles title at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, China. World Number two Murray defeated Grigor Dimitrov by 6–4, 7–6.
  • Brazil on 15 October 2016 won the first BRICS U-17 football tournament. In the title clash played at Nehru Stadium of Margo, Goa, Brazil defeated South Africa 5-1.
  • Indian shuttler Sourabh Verma on 16 October 2016 clinched the men's singles title at the Chinese Taipei Open badminton. In the summit clash of the 55000 dollar Grand Prix tournament in Taipei City, Saurabh defeated Malaysia's Daren Liew, 12-10, 12-10, 3-3.
  • India on 22 October 2016 lifted the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup. Team India, under the captaincy of Anup Kumar, defeated Iran 38-29 in the final held at the Arena By TransStadia in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This was India's 3rd World Cup in the Standard Style version of Kabaddi.
  • India on 30 October 2016 won the 4th edition of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy for men. India defeated Pakistan 3-2 to reclaim the Asian Champions Trophy title.

  • Ashok Leyland Ltd unveiled its Circuit Series electric bus. They are India’s first such indigenously made vehicle. The buses are designed and engineered in India. They are specifically developed for Indian road conditions.

  • Russia on 8 October 2016 vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution demanding an end to the bombing of Aleppo city in Syria. The draft text proposed by France and Spain won 11 votes in favor, Russia and Venezuela voted against the resolution, while China and Angola abstained. It was the fifth time that Moscow used its veto to block the UN action to end the five year war in Syria.
  • The Ross Sea, a deep bay of the Southern Ocean in Antarctica, was declared as world’s largest Marine Protected Area (MPA) on 28 October 2016. With this, there will be a blanket ban on commercial fishing across about three quarters of that area for 35 years. It will be the world's largest marine protected area and covers 1.6 million square kilometers.
