1290Jalal ud-din Firuz Khilji established the Khilji dynasty at Delhi. The Khilji dynasty was a Muslim dynasty of Turkic origin, which ruled large parts of South Asia between 1290 and 1320. It was founded by Jalal ud din Firuz Khilji and became the second dynasty to rule the Delhi Sultanate of India.
1373Anglo-Portuguese Alliance took place between England and Portugal is the oldest alliance in the world which is still in force. This alliance has served both countries. It was very important throughout history, influencing the participation of the United Kingdom in the Iberian Peninsular War, the UK's major land contribution to the Napoleonic Wars and the establishment of an Anglo-American base in Portugal.
1879Ganesh Damodar Savarkar, an Indian revolutionary, was born. Ganesh Dāmodar Sāvarkar also called Babarao Savarkar was an Indian freedom fighter, nationalist, and founder of the Abhinav Bharat Society. He was the epitome of heroism that is unknown and unsung. He led an armed movement against the British colonial government in India, he was sentenced to transportation for life as a result.
1940Revolutionary leader Udham Singh was hanged for charges of assassinating Micheal Odair, who was the Governor General of Punjab at the time of Jalianwala Baugh massacre. Singh is a prominent figure of the Indian independence struggle. He is sometimes referred to as Shaheed-i-Azam Sardar Udham Singh.
1955Mir Mine, the first diamond mine in the USSR, was discovered. The diamond-bearing deposits were discovered by Soviet geologists Yuri Khabardin, Ekaterina Elagina and Viktor Avdeenko during the large Amakinsky Expedition in Yakut ASSR. They found traces of the volcanic rock kimberlite, which is usually associated with diamonds.
1978Israel Defence Forces withdrew from Lebanon. The South Lebanon conflict was an invasion of Lebanon up to the Litani River, carried out by the Israel Defense Forces in 1978 in response to the Coastal Road massacre. The conflict resulted in the deaths of 1,100–2,000 Lebanese and Palestinians, 20 Israelis, the internal displacement of 100,000 to 250,000 people in Lebanon, and the PLO forces retreating north of the Litani River.
1982Fahd became King of Saudi Arabia upon the death of his brother, Khalid. Fahd bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, was the King of Saudi Arabia from 1982 to 2005. Fahd was appointed Crown Prince when Khalid succeeded their half-brother King Faisal, who was assassinated in 1975. Fahd was viewed as the de facto prime minister during King Khalid's reign in part due to the latter's ill health.
1983Pioneer 10 became the first man-made object to leave the central Solar System when it passes beyond the orbit of Neptune (the farthest planet from the Sun at the time). Pioneer 10 was an American space probe, weighing 258 kilograms that completed the first mission to the planet Jupiter. This exploration project was conducted by the NASA Ames Research Center in California
1999The Indian army secures the strategic Tololing peak in the Dras sector during Kargil war. The capture of the Tololing complex paved the way for successive assaults to be launched on the Tiger Hill complex from several directions. Tiger Hill was re-captured on July 5, 1999.
2010A capsule of the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa, containing particles of the asteroid 25143 Itokawa, returns to Earth. Hayabusa was an unmanned spacecraft developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to return a sample of material from a small near-Earth asteroid named 25143 Itokawa to Earth for further analysis.
