1815Napoleonic Wars: The Battle of Waterloo resulted in the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte by the Duke of Wellington and Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher forcing him to abdicate the throne of France for the second and last time. It was an attempt by German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck to continue to ally with Russia after the League of the Three Emperors had broken down in the aftermath of the 1885 Serbo-Bulgarian War.
1858Charles Darwin receives a paper from Alfred Russel Wallace that includes nearly identical conclusions about evolution as Darwin's own, prompting Darwin to publish his theory. Alfred Russel Wallace OM FRS was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, and biologist. He is best known for independently conceiving the theory of evolution through natural selection; his paper on the subject was jointly published with some of Charles Darwin's writings.
1923Checker Taxi puts its first taxi on the streets. Motorized taxi cabs began to appear on the streets of major cities beginning in the early 1900s. Particularly in Chicago, where numerous railroads had terminals, there was considerable need for on-demand, point-to-point chauffeur-driven transportation.
1946Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, a Socialist, called for a Direct Action Day against the Portuguese in Goa. A road is named after this date in Panjim. 1983Space Shuttle program: STS-7, Astronaut Sally Ride became the first American woman in space. Sally Kristen Ride was an American physicist and astronaut. Born in Los Angeles, she joined NASA in 1978 and became the first American woman in space in 1983. She remains the youngest American astronaut to have travelled to space, having done so at the age of 32.
2006The first Kazakh space satellite, KazSat was launched. KazSat was a communications satellite planned to occupy a geosynchronous orbit approximately 36,000km above the Earth. It was produced by Khrunichev Space Center in cooperation with Thales Alenia Space. Partial control of the satellite was lost in July 2008 and completely in October 2008.
2009The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), a NASA robotic spacecraft was launched. The LRO mission is a precursor to future human and robotic missions to the Moon by NASA. To this end a detailed mapping program will identify safe landing sites, locate potential resources on the Moon, characterize the radiation environment, and demonstrate new technology.
