1917The Selective Service Act of 1917 was passed on 18th May, drafted by then –Captain Hugh S. Johnson to authorize the federal government to raise a national army through conscription. According to the draft all the men between the ages of 21-30 were required to register for military services for the American entry into World War I.
1944The Battle of Monte Cassino was ended on May 18, 1944 after 123 days series of four assaults by the Allies against the Winter Line in Italy held by Axis forces during World War II. Operation Diadem, the fourth battle of Monte Cassino took place on 11th May 1944 and was supported by the air attacks named Operation Strangle; on 18th May German position collapsed.
1953American Jacqueline Cochran became the first woman pilot to go supersonic on May 18, 1953 when she flew Canadair F-86 Sabre jet aircraft and broke the sound barrier.
