1179The Norwegian Battle of Kalvskinnet outside Nidaros. The battle was fought between King Sverre Sigurdsson and Erling Skakke. Eriling was killed and the battle changed the course of Civil Wars.
1586English colonies left Roanoke Island after failing to establish England’s first permanent settlement in North America. The establishment was financed by Sir Humphrey Gilbert. The final group of colonists disappeared during Anglo- Spanish war, three years after the last shipment of supplies from England. The Roanoke colony, known as the lost colony was located in today’s Dare County, North Carolina, USA.
1816Battle of Seven Oaks started between North West Company and Hudson’s Bay Company near Winnipeg, Canada. The main cause of dispute was Fur trade. It is also known as Pemmican War.
1862The U.S. Congress prohibited slavery in United States territories, nullifying Dread Scott Vs. Stanford. Dred Scott Vs. Stanford was a decision by the US Supreme Court which held that African Americans, whether enslaved or free, could not be American citizens and therefore had no standing to sue in Federal court.
1961Kuwait declared independence from the United Kingdom. It was a British Protectorate between 1899 and 1961. After the independence, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah became the king.
1978Garfiled made its debut. Garfield, holder of the Guinness World record for the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip, features a fat n lazy cat named Garfield, his owner John and a fellow pet dog Odie. Till 2013, it was syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals worldwide.
1991The Soviet occupation of Hungary ended. It was captured by the Soviet Union during World War-II and the occupation lasted for 45 years. In the rise of the Revolutions of 1989,the Soivet troops started leaving Hungary and the last group of Soviet soldiers left Hungary on 19 June 1991.
2010The wedding of Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden and Daniel Westling was held at Storkyrkan in Stockholm Cathedral. Westling thereby acquired Victoria’s ducal title, becoming a Swedish prince and Duke of Västergötland. This wedding has been described as Europe’s biggest Royal wedding since The Prince of Wales married Lady Diana.
2012Wikileaks founder Julian Assange requested asylum in London’s Ecuadorian Embassy for fear of extradition to the US after publication of some classified documents including civilian killings by US Army.
2014Felipe VI, Prince of Asturias, held the Spanish throne following the abduction of his father, Juan Carlos I.
