1555Humayun crossed the Indus and captured Lahore and ousted Sikandar Suri of Delhi throne. The Mughal Emperor Humayun, gathered a vast army and attempted the challenging task of retaking the throne in Delhi. Humayun placed the army under the able leadership of Bairam Khan. This was a wise move given Humayun's own record of military ineptitude, and turned out to be prescient, as Bairam was to prove himself a great tactician.
1897The Chafekar brothers, Damodar and Balkrishna, shot British Officer Rand in Pune. This event played a very important role in the revolutionary freedom fighter. The brothers and two accomplices were charged with the murders in various roles, as well as the shooting of two informants and an attempt to shoot a police officer. All three brothers were found guilty and hanged, an accomplice was dealt with similarly, another, then a schoolboy, was sentenced to ten years' rigorous imprisonment.
1940Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose established the 'Forward Block' after differences with Congress leaders. Netaji had resigned from the presidency of the Indian National Congress after being outmanoeuvred by Mohandas K. Gandhi. The formation of the Forward Bloc was announced to the public at a rally in Calcutta. Bose said that who all were joining, they had to never turn their back to the British and must fill the pledge form by cutting their finger and signing it with their blood.
1941Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa. Operation Barbarossa was the code name for Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II, which began on 22 June 1941. Over the course of the operation, about four million soldiers of the Axis powers invaded Soviet Russia along a 2,900 kilometer front, the largest invasion force in the history of warfare.
1945The Battle of Okinawa came to an end. The Battle of Okinawa codenamed Operation Iceberg, was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and included the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War during World War II. The 82-day-long battle lasted from early April until mid-June 1945.
1957The Soviet Union launched an R-12 missile for the first time. Deployments of the R-12 missile in Cuba caused the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. A total of 2335 missiles were produced; however, all were destroyed in 1993 under the Soviet and US Arms Control Treaty.
1975National Emergency was declared and censorship introduced in India. In India, "the Emergency" refers to a 21-month period when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi unilaterally had a state of emergency declared across the country. Officially issued by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352(1) of the Constitution for "internal disturbance". The order bestowed upon the prime minister the authority to rule by decree, allowing elections to be suspended and civil liberties to be curbed.
1978Charon, a satellite of the dwarf planet Pluto, was discovered by American astronomer James W. Christy. Charon is the largest satellite of the dwarf planet Pluto. It was discovered at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, DC. It is a very large moon in comparison to its parent body, Pluto. Its gravitational influence is such that the barycentre of the Pluto–Charon system lies outside Pluto.
1990Checkpoint Charlie was dismantled in Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie was the name given by the Western Allies to the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War.
1995India and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) sign MOU enabling them to visit suspected militants and persons in detention centres only under humanitarian consideration. This action was praised worldwide by humanists.
