1557Sikandar Shah Suri, an army of 80,000 horses himself and met the Army at Sirhind. He was defeated by the Mughal army and was compelled to retreat to the Sivalik Hills in northern Punjab. The victorious Mughals marched to Delhi and occupied it. Sikandar Shah Suri was the sixth ruler of Sur dynasty, a late medieval Pashtun dynasty of northern India. He became the sultan of Delhi after overthrowing Ibrahim Shah Suri.
1832The First Kingdom of Greece was declared in the London Conference. The Kingdom of Greece was a state established in 1832 at the Convention of London by the Great Powers, the United Kingdom, France and the Russian Empire. It was internationally recognized by the Treaty of Constantinople, where it also secured full independence from the Ottoman Empire.

1962Project Mercury: American astronaut Scott Carpenter orbited the Earth three times in the Aurora 7 space capsule. Malcolm Scott Carpenter was an American naval officer and aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, astronaut, and aquanaut. He was one of the original seven astronauts selected for NASA's Project Mercury. Carpenter was the second American to orbit the Earth and the fourth American in space.
1970The drilling of the Kola Super deep Borehole began in the Soviet Union. The Kola Superdeep Borehole is the result of a scientific drilling project of the Soviet Union. The project attempted to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust. A number of boreholes were drilled by branching from a central hole. The deepest, reached 12,262 metres in 1989 and still is the deepest artificial point on Earth.
1976Concorde service began from London to Washington DC. Concorde is a turbojet-powered supersonic passenger jet airliner that was in service from 1976 to 2003. It is one of only two supersonic transports to have entered commercial service. It featured a maximum speed over twice the speed of sound at Mach 2.04, with seating for 92 to 128 passengers.
1993Eritrea gained its independence from Ethiopia. Following a UN-supervised referendum in Eritrea in which the Eritrean people overwhelmingly voted for independence, Eritrea declared its independence and gained international recognition.

2015The Republic of Ireland voted to legalize same-sex marriage, becoming the first country to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. The marriage is recognized irrespective of the sex of the partners. The result requires ratification in the Oireachtas before going into legal effect, though it is estimated that the first same-sex marriages will take place in autumn 2015.
