1886Rashbehari Bose was born. He Rashbehari Bose was a revolutionary leader against the British Raj in India and was one of the key organizers of the Ghadar Revolution and later, the Indian National Army. He earned degrees in the medical sciences as well as in Engineering from France and Germany.
1899Nazrul Islam was born. Kazi Nazrul Islam was a Bangladeshi poet, writer, and musician, revolutionary and is the national poet of Bangladesh. Popularly known as Nazrul, his poetry and music espoused Indo-Islamic renaissance and intense spiritual rebellion against fascism and oppression.
1915Sabarmati ashram was established by MK Gandhi. Sabarmati Ashram is located in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad Gujarat. This was one of the residences of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, generally called Mahatma Gandhi, who lived there for about twelve years along with his wife, Kasturba Gandhi.
1941Sagarmal Gopa, a devoted freedom fighter of India was arrested in Jaisalmer. He opposed anti-people policies of then rulers of Jaisalmer. He was expelled from Jaisalmer and Hyderabad. Even in exile he continued to work for freedom movement. He was tortured in prison for years. He died in the prison on 4 April 1946.
1955First ascent of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world. It rises with an elevation of 8,586 m (28,169 ft) in a section of the Himalayas called Kangchenjunga Himal that is limited in the west by the Tamur River and in the east by the Teesta River. The Kangchenjunga Himal is located in eastern Nepal and Sikkim, India. British expedition team led by Charles Evans. Joe Brown and George Band reached the summit, followed by Norman Hardie and Tony Streather the next day.
1966Explorer 32 launched. Explorer 32, also known as Atmosphere Explorer-B (AE-B), was a satellite launched by the United States to study the Earth's upper atmosphere. It was launched from Cape Canaveral on a Delta-C1 rocket. It was the second of five Atmosphere Explorers, the first being Explorer 17.
2000Israeli troops withdraw from southern Lebanon after 22 years of occupation. The Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon took place when Israel took control of portions of Lebanon during the 1982 Lebanon War. Israel left the Lebanon but remained in partial control of the border region known as the South Lebanon Security Belt, in coordination with the South Lebanon Army, until 2000. Israel's stated purpose for the Security Belt was to create a space separating its northern border towns from terrorists residing in Lebanon.
2001Erik Weihenmayer, 32 years old, became the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Erik Weihenmayer is an American athlete, adventurer, author, activist and motivational speaker, and the only blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
2002Russia and the United States signed the Moscow Treaty. The Treaty between the United States of America and the Russian Federation on Strategic Offensive Reductions (SORT), also known as the Treaty of Moscow, was a strategic arms reduction treaty between the United States and Russia that was in force from June 2003 until February 2011 when it was superseded by the New START treaty.
2008NASA's Phoenix lander landed in Green Valley region of Mars to search for environments suitable for water and microbial life. Phoenix was a robotic spacecraft on a space exploration mission on Mars under the Mars Scout Program. The total mission cost was about US $386 million, which includes cost of the launch.
