1806British forces took Buenos Aires during the first British invasions of the River Plate. The British invasions of the River Plate were a series of unsuccessful British attempts to seize control of the Spanish colonies located around the La Plata Basin in South America (today part of Argentina and Uruguay). The invasions took place between 1806 and 1807, as part of the Napoleonic Wars, when Spain was an ally of France.
1838Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (Chatterjee), famous novelist, ""the father of modern Indian fiction"" and writer of national song 'Vande Mataram', was born at Katalpara near Naihati, West Bengal. Some of his writings are 'Anandmath' and 'Kapal Kundala'. He was among the first two Bengalee Graduates.
1895The inaugural run of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's Royal Blue from Washington, D.C., to New York City, the first U.S. passenger train to use electric locomotives. A railway electrification system supplies electric power to railway trains and trams without an on-board prime mover or local fuel supply. Electrification has many advantages but requires significant capital expenditure.
1906`Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad' established. Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad is a literary institution situated in the West Indian state of Maharashtra for the purpose of the "furtherance of Marathi language and literature". It was set up in Pune. The Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature considers it as Marathi's first representative literary body.
1954The Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant, the Soviet Union's first nuclear power station, opens in Obninsk, near Moscow. It was the first grid-connected nuclear power station in the world, i.e. the first nuclear reactor that produced commercial electricity, albeit at small scale. It was located at the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering. The plant is also known as APS-1 Obninsk (Atomic Power Station 1 Obninsk).
1967First Indian made AVRO aircraft passenger Plane HS748 handed over to Indian Airlines. The Hawker Siddeley HS 748 is a medium-sized turboprop airliner originally designed by the British firm Avro. This aircraft was built under the collaboration of British AVRO and India’s Hindustan aeronautics Ltd.
1977France granted freedom to Djibouti. Republic of Djibouti is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Eritrea in the north, Ethiopia in the west and south, and Somalia in the southeast. The remainder of the border is formed by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden at the east.
1982Space Shuttle Columbia launched from the Kennedy Space Center on the final research and development flight mission, STS-4. STS-4 was the fourth NASA Space Shuttle mission, and also the fourth for Space Shuttle Columbia. STS-4 was the final test flight for the shuttle; it was thereafter officially declared to be operational. Columbia carried numerous scientific payloads during the mission, as well as military missile detection systems.
1991Slovenia, after declaring independence two days before is invaded by Yugoslav troops, tanks, and aircraft starting the Ten-Day War. It was fought between the Slovenian Territorial Defence and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) , after Slovenia declared its independence. It lasted when the Brijuni Accords were signed.
2013NASA launched the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, a space probe to observe the Sun. The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) is a NASA solar observation satellite. The mission was funded through the Small Explorer program to investigate the physical conditions of the solar limb, particularly the chromosphere of the Sun.
