1328Philip VI is crowned King of France. Philip VI, called the Fortunate and of Valois, was the first King of France from the House of Valois. He reigned from 1328 until his death. Philip's reign was dominated by the consequences of a succession dispute. When King Charles IV the Fair died without a male heir in 1328, the nearest male relative was his nephew Edward III of England, who inherited his claim through his mother Isabella of France, the sister of the dead king.
1658Dara Shukoh was utterly defeated by Aurangzeb in the battle of Samugarh near Agra. Dara Shikoh was the eldest son and the heir-apparent of the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. He was favoured as a successor by his father and his sister Princess Jahanara Begum Sahib, but was defeated by his younger brother Prince Muhiuddin in a bitter struggle for the imperial throne.
1677Treaty of Middle Plantation established peace between the Virginia colonists and the local Natives. The treaty designated those that signed as “tributary tribe(s),” meaning they were guaranteed their homeland territories, hunting and fishing rights, the right to keep and bear arms, and other colonial protections so long as they maintained obedience and subjugation to the English Empire.
1933Gandhi ends his 21-day fast, his second for the cause of the 'untouchables.' He was fighting for the rights of dalits or lower caste people of community who were considered as untouchables and were prohibited from entering in holy places. He coined the term Harijan for untouchables.
1947Establishment of Indian Standard Institution. In the twilight years of British rule in India, when the country was faced with the gigantic task of building up the industrial infrastructure, it was the Institution of Engineers (India), which prepared the first draft of the Constitution of an Institution which could take up the task of formulation of National Standards.
1948Creation of the United Nations peacekeeping force -the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization. The United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) is an organization founded for peacekeeping in the Middle East. Its primary task was providing the military command structure to the peace keeping forces in the Middle East to enable the peace keepers to observe and maintain the cease-fire, and as may be necessary in assisting the parties to the Armistice Agreements.
1953Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay become the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, on Tenzing Norgay's (adopted) 39th birthday. Sir Edmund Percival Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist. Tenzing Norgay born Namgyal Wangdi and often referred to as Sherpa Tenzing, was a Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer.
1965Indian Everest team sets a world record by climbing the Everest for the fourth time. It was the first time when any of the expedition team reached the peak of everest fourth time in the world. This expedition earned a lot of appreciation around the world.
2002NATO declares Russia a limited partner in the Western alliance. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed. The organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.
2002The Mars Odyssey finds signs of large ice deposits on the planet Mars. 2001 Mars Odyssey is a robotic spacecraft orbiting the planet Mars. The project was developed by NASA, and contracted out to Lockheed Martin. Its mission is to use spectrometers and a thermal imager to detect evidence of past or present water and ice, as well as study the planet's geology and radiation environment.
