  • The Maulana Azad Dental Institute bagged the FICCI Excellence Award. The health care operational award was given away by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry after rounds of assessment.   • The Board of trustees of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust decided to award the contract for its fourth container terminal to the consortium of Singapore's PSA and the ABG group in India.

  • In Kerala, the IT enabled round the clock public grievance redressal cell in Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's office began functioning.

  • India signed DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement) with Estonia and forged a pact to work with it in the field of information, communications and technology (ICT).
  • Goa became the first state in India to launch Swarnajayanti Aarogya Bima Yojana providing health insurance cover for the entire resident population of the State. The State Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ICICI Lombard which is the implementing agency for the new health insurance cover.
  • As per the provisional data released by the the Commerce Ministry, the eight core infrastructure industries registered an output growth of 3.5 per cent in August 2011 lower than the 4.4 per cent growth witnessed in the corresponding period in 2010
  • The Union government increased the foreign direct investment limit for FM radio from 20 per cent to 26 per cent. The government also exempted the education sector and old-age homes from the conditions imposed in the construction sector.

  • Securities and Exchange Boar of India (SEBI) notified the new takeover rule under which an entity buying 25% stake in a listed firm will have to mandatorily make an open offer to buy an additional 26% shares from the public.

  • The doyen of industry in Andhra Pradesh, Mullapudi Harischandra Prasad died. He was the Chairman and Managing Director of Andhra Sugars.
  • Eminent sculptor Ganapati Sthapati died in Chennai. He had sculpted the famous Tiruvalluvar statue in Kanyakumari and Buddha statue in Hussainsagar.
  • Bollywood's legendary photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha passed away in Mumbai. Born in 1950 in Mumbai, Rajadhyaksha went on to become synonymous with Bollywood portrait photography during the 80s and 90s and also experimented in film making and writing screen plays.
  • Veteran musician, musicologist and revered guru T.K. Govinda Rao passed away. A highly regarded musician and practioner of Carnatic music Govinda Rao received his initial training under Chembai Vaidhyanatha Bhagavathar and much of his advanced music training under the legendary Musiri Subramania Iyer.
  • Leading Punjabi playwright and theatre personality Gursharan Singh popularly known as bhajji died. Gursharan Singh was known to have developed the character of Bhai Manna Singh through his plays.

  • The Haryana government introduced a policy to provide security to whistleblowers and RTI activists in the state. The notification issued by the government stated that a whistleblower or a RTI activist could submit an application to superintendent of police or local police commissioner, in case there is any threat to his (whistleblower) life.
  • The Rajasthan government has decided to fix quota in promotion for SC and ST employees  working with the state government. This will be 16 per cent for SC employees and 12 per cent for ST employees.
