  • Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, will be named as the prime ministerial candidate of BJP for the 2014 General Elections a few days before his birthday on 17th September.
  • Arundhati Bhattacharya is believed to be the front-runner for the post of chairperson of country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI), sources said. Last week, a government appointed search panel had shortlisted names of two managing directors- Bhattacharya and S Viswanathan- for the top job at the SBI.
  • Narayanaswamy Srinivasan will be re-elected as president of the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India for a third year. But still it is not clear whether on Monday he can take charge or not as the Supreme Court is yet to decide the matter pertaining to the petition filed by the secretary of the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) on Monday.

  • Largest solar power project of 4,000 MW near Sambhar lake in Rajasthan has been started by the Department of Heavy Industry (DHI). Ultra Mega Green Solar Power Project will be set up in the 23,000 acre area of Sambhar Salts Limited (SSL), subsidiary of Hindustan Salts Limited (HSL). With the total capacity of 4,000 MW, this the largest solar based power project in the world. By the end of 2016, the first phase of the project will be commissioned.
  • After a US ban on imports of items prepared at the Mohali plant of Ranbaxy, is the turn of the regulators in Australia and Europe that also includes regulators of UK. Officials are seeking information from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the lapses and necessary action will be taken after getting report from FDA.
  • BSNL and MTNL will work hands in glove to offer better services to the consumers. Today they signed agreement wherein it is specified that infrastructure and enterprise business will be shared to increase operational execution and better customer services.

  • Pakistan has given the assurance to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that it would grant the status of MFN or the most favoured nation to India. In a written assurance Pakistan has specified that it was forging ahead to remove all the negativity on the trade list with India.
  • Chandigarh is the most planned city in India and soon it will become slum free with the joint efforts by the administration of the Union Territory and the Center. The slum dwellers in Chandigarh are given keys of their homes (newly built flats) by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. This has been done under the slum rehabilitation scheme of Chandigarh.

  • Google will give 10GB of free storage to the Google Drive account when a user logs into their account through Google Quickoffice but one has to do this before 26th September, 2013. Once the application is installed the user needs to run it and then log into their Google account and instantly they would get the free space.
  • Google has come up with a big upgrade in its search algorithm which is operational since past one month and is believed to affect at least 90% of the searches. This algorithm is supposed to deal with complex queries and Google’s Amit Singhal stated users should be spending time more in living than in searching for answers to their queries.

In fact the match was over in 1 hour 50 min and the players won the match 6-4 7-6. Now they will face 8th seeded Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty in the semi-final.
  • The brothers Bob and Mike Bryan had their eyes set on becoming only the second men’s pair to win all the Grand Slams in a single year. Little did they know that their dream will come crashing down and that too the danger will come from an unknown quarter. They lost to Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in the semifinals of the U.S.
  • Parupalli Kashyap climbed a position to be the 13th spot of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings which was declared on Thursday. Apart from him the other shuttlers in the male category who are in top 25 are R.M.V. Gurusaidutt, at No.20 which he maintained, and Ajay Jayaram, improved his position by one slot to 23. Saina Nehwal remains at No.4 and P.V. Sindhu who grabbed a bronze at the World Championship maintained her No.10 position.
  • The 4th Edition of Champions League Twenty20 will kick start from Tuesday at Mohali with the qualifying matches. Faisalabad Wolve, Pakistan's champions at the domestic level will be looking to grab the limelight.
  • The ICC ODI rankings were released in which Ravindra Jadeja figures in the top slot in the bowler’s list along with Sunil Narine of West Indies. Virat Kohli features in the batsmen’s list and is also the top ranking Indian batsman at 4th position.
  • The petition filed by Lalit Modi, the former IPL commissioner seeking to adjourn BCCI’s special general meeting was rejected by the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The Indian Cricket Board had its meeting when the court stated it is not going to interfere in the proceedings of the BCCI.

  • All India Radio has unveiled a free SMS service which updates the subscribers with the important news and happenings. Information and Broadcasting Minister, Manish Tewari, launched this along with the Bharat Nirman online portal. Interestingly the pilot project was launched 6 months back and since there was huge response so it has been launched on a wide scale.
  • The Mars orbiter, the spacecraft for India’s maiden Mars mission has been built. This would be launched anytime between October 21 to November 19 from Sriharikota. It will have a rocket with 5 instruments to carry on number of experiments while it circles Mars.
  • Agni-5, a new ballistic missile has been successfully test-launched at Wheeler Island, Odisha. Agni-5 has the potential of carrying a warhead to Beijing and Shanghai and even to Habin City, the northern most tip of China. The test-launch was done at 8:43 am. The test is done for the second time in the period of two years.
  • The BBM for Android will be released on September 21 for Android and September 22 for iOS. BBM for Android devices will be there for Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean platforms while for iPhones it can be downloaded on iOS 6 and iOS 7.
  • Omnicom Media Group launched its second media planning and buying agency, the digital-focused PHD in India.
