  • Religare Enterprises Limited (REL) on 5 September 2016 appointed Sunil Godhwani as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Godhwani is appointed the Whole Time Director and CEO for the remaining period of his tenure.
  • BHVS Narayana Murthy, an expert in Avionics, in the second week of September 2016 was appointed as Director of Research Centre Imarat (RCI).The RCI is a premiere Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory located in Hyderabad.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee on 17 September 2016 appointed Alka Sirohi, a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as its Chairman. Sirohi\'s appointment will be effective from 21 September 2016.
  • Junaid Ahmad was on 21 September 2016 appointed as the World Bank Country Director for India. He will succeed Onno Ruhl who completed his four-year term recently. Ahmad joined the World Bank in 1991 as a young professional.
  • The United States appointed its first Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis to Cuba in 55. The two countries broke off relations in 1961 after the communist revolution.
  • Executive Directors of the World Bank on 27 September 2016 agreed unanimously to reappoint Jim Yong Kim to a second five-year term as President of the World Bank Group, beginning 1 July 2017.

  • Veteran award-winning film director K.G. George on 6 September 2016 won the prestigious J.C. Daniel Award for his overall contribution to the Malayalam film industry.
  • Indian American Ramesh Raskar on 13 September 2016 won the 2016 Lemelson-MIT Prize. Raskar is the co-inventor of radical imaging solutions including femtophotography, an ultra-fast imaging system that can see around corners, low-cost eye-care solutions for the developing world and a camera that allows users to read pages of a book without opening the cover.
  • Famous Telugu writer Prof. Kalakaluri Enoch was on 29 September 2016 conferred with Moortidevi Award of Bharatiya Jnanpith for the year 2015 at function in New Delhi. The award was given for his novel Ananta Jeevanam.

  • Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani topped the Forbes list of richest Indians for the ninth consecutive year. Ambani, who rolled out his most ambitious project, Reliance Jio Infocomm, this month increased his net worth to $22.7 billion from $18.9 billion a year earlier as shares of Reliance Industries gained 21%.
  • Indian Cabinet Minstry Increased the equity investment of the employees provident fund organisation (EPFO) to 10% in 2016-17 as compared to 5% invested in the last financial year, bypassing the need for consensus by the Central Board of Trustees of the EPFO.

  • Pulitzer-winning US playwright Edward Albee passed away on 16 September 2016 following a brief illness in Montauk, New York. He was 88.
  • Reoti Saran Sharma, the renowned Hindi and Urdu writer, playwright and television personality, died in New Delhi on 23 September 2016. He was 92 years.
  • Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres passed away on 28 September 2016 at Ramat Gan, Israel. He was 93. Peres served twice as Israel\'s Prime Minister and once as President.

  • Ajay Kaul on 19 September 2016 resigned as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jubilant FoodWorks Limited. However, Kaul will continue in his current role till March 2017.

  • Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on 1 September 2016 launched an insurance scheme for passengers travelling on e- ticket. The insurance cover will be up to 10 lakh rupees. The insurance coverage will be available in case of train accidents and other untoward incidents, including terrorist attack, dacoity, rioting, shooting or arson.

  • Nico Rosberg on 4 September 2016 won the 2016 Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza, Italy.
  • Mariyappan Thangavelu won India’s first gold medal at the Rio Paralympics on 9 September 2016. He won the gold in the Men’s High Jump T-42 event with a leap of 1.89 metres. With this, Thangavelu also became the first Indian high-jumper to win gold at the Paralympics.
  • Germany’s Angelique Kerber on 10 September 2016 defeated Karolina Pliskova by 6–3, 4–6, 6–4 to win 2016 US Open Women\'s Singles title. It was Kerber\'s second Grand Slam singles title. With this, she became the first German to win the US Open since Steffi Graf in 1996.
  • Army Green on 11 September 2016 won the Durand Cup football title. In the final of Asia\'s oldest football tournament in New Delhi, Army Green defeated Neroca FC 6-5 via penalty shoot outs.
  • Indian athlete Deepa Malik on 12 September 2016 became the first Indian woman to bag a medal at the Paralympics. Malik clinched a silver medal in the shotput F-53 event. Her throw of 4.61m was the best in her six attempts.
  • Gautam Gambhir-led India Blue on 14 September 2016 won the inaugural day/night Duleep Trophy Cricket tournament held in Greater Noida. In the final, India Blue defeated India Red, captained by Yuvraj Singh, by a massive 355 runs.
  • Indian shooter Subhankar Pramanick has clinched the gold medal in 50-metre rifle prone event at the ISSF Junior World Cup for pistol, rifle and shotgun at Gabala in Azerbaijan. 
  • Indian Tennis Player Sania Mirza and her Czech partner Barbora Strycova on 24 September 2016 lifted the women’s doubles title in the Toray Pan Pacific Open trophy in Tokyo. In the final clash, the Indo-Czech pair defeated the unseeded Chinese pair of Chen Liang and Zhaoxuan Yang 6-1, 6-1.
  • Indian All-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin on 25 September 2016 became the fastest Indian and second overall to take 200 wickets, reaching the milestone in his 37th Test.

  • Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Shipping, and Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology and Law and Justice, on 7 September 2016 jointly launched Integration of DigiLocker with Driving Licenses (DL) & Vehicle Registration Certificates (RC) in New Delhi.
